I made my best call on what was wrong withe the car and it was wrong. I did not have any weekend time to do the suggested test and I sure as hell wasn't going to do it in the dark. My plan was to have the part on hand when I got back from Chicago. Unfortunately, my diagnosis was completely wrong and it didn't work out. I'm sure everyone here has ended up buying a part they didn't need because they called it wrong.
Hey to be clear, actually in my mind you navigated this one well, and I'm definitely not saying I could have done any better. Including you were urged by legions of MVSers about how to replace a part none of us had ever worked on before ... Maybe just a reminder that its ok to take the group-think with a grain of salt.

Thanks for posting up the whole story (so far?) too!

I should have looked more thoroughly but I didn't have time. Nobody's fault but mine. I could have avoided a lot of effort had I looked more closely. That said if you ever have to replace an oil pump its much harder than it looks getting the old one out. It would have been much easier if I could have found my mini crow bar.

If the folks here could post some items that are easy to get out that sell for a lot used, I could cut my losses in half. A list of parts and suggested fair used prices would really help. The ABS control module and ECU come to mind.

- Actually most of us do the same: we diagnose the problems ahead of time and then buy parts ahead, this way we can fix the whole thing in a weekend as many of us rely on the Volvo to go to work etc. Most of us here are "Saturday mechanics" so we cannot afford much time down for the car, thus the "homework" done ahead to avoid wasting time. This happens to be a lottery for the O.P. Buying an oil pump ahead of time saves time but if the diagnosis is wrong, one is stuck with the oil pump. BTW, you can email the ebay seller and says you made the wrong diagnosis, can he take it back (you pay shipping), just a thought.

- Dealer mechanics are different: it is not their car, it is the customer's car, so they can take some time to do the work. Plus, many of the parts they need are in the parts dept. If not, they can Fedex it next day. We, the Saturday mechanics, do not have this luxury.

- Valuable parts in the car: ABS Module (electronic part), ECM, TCM, ICV, Fuel Relays, Hazard Relays, Console switches, Radio, door actuators, steering wheel/airbag, brake calipers, axles, wheel bearings (if newish) etc.

- Junkyard buys the car by weight (how many tons etc.), so remove battery, wheels/tires just before jy comes to pick it up.

So how does that work" I would think the jy would weigh the car when they receive it to discourage people from pulling stuff after the purchase offer (based on vehicle weight) is made.

Also, how does the junkyard load a car without wheels and tires? I have a new driveway (cost me a fortune) and pulling a car with no wheels across it by a cable onto a flatbed will totally destroy the finish.

I've got a nearly full tank of mid grade fuel. How can I pump that out using the fuel pump? Can I just disconnect the line at the fuel rail and pump it into 5 gallon containers using a hose?

The fuel pump is only a few months old - easy pull. I also have an OE (nearly new) passenger side axle and several other OE spare axles. I haven't kept track but the passenger side axle on the car probably has less than 25,000 miles on it. Selling this stuff will be a pain but I could definitely raise some cash. I got an online offer of $150 for the car this morning. Its worth more than that in scrap value of the steel alone I would guess.

Transmission PNP switch ($25-30)

Headlight assemblies (~$25-50 each)
Corner/Turn Signal assemblies (~$20 each)
Tailgate wiring harness (~$25)
Heater core ($50 if OEM, maybe $25 if aftermarket)
Heater core hoses that go from the firewall to the block ($25 each or $50 for the pair - if OEM)
Upper and lower radiator hoses (if silicone aftermarket - ~$50)
Steering rack (~$200)
Power steering pump ($50)
AC Compressor ($50-100 if previously working without issue)
Refrigerant lines off the compressor ($25-50 each - they're expensive new)
Steering wheel ($25-50)
3rd row seat ($50)

I'm unsure but I believe the key fob remotes may be reusable.

Note: I'm extremely cheap - some of these may be worth more, some less.

Yeah, jumper the fuel pump relay and just pump her out.

If you have a multifunction/info switch I'd be interested in it. Mine has lost the little metal clips that keep it seated in the dash.

TCM (from any P80) and ECM (from an NA) are almost completely worthless, don't bother with those. Remember, the problem is never the ECU ... But turbo ECU's have a market because they are so easy to tune.

How the scrap yard works, when the vehicle gets to their location, they weigh it and give you the value on the spot. There's no way to fool them. You just take what you want from it, then get rid of it. If you have them pick up the car, you will pay for that. I doubt any yard will do that for free, certainly not around here. I've scrapped two of them recently, scrap value was about $250 and I shelled out another $50 to have it pulled onto a flatbed and towed across town (very short distance so low towing expense).
