Thanks! I think they might have made an error on the Valves when they gave me a quote.

1998 S70 T5 Low Compression after stall, will not retart
Just to inform you I got an estimate for a complete valve job replacing all the valves. Hold onto your hat.........$3799.00.
I am now motivated to tackle this job myself. I will have my vehicle towed home again and I will drop the head off to a reputable machine shop. This might be a diffucult task since I did not remove it. But with this outrageous price I will handle it. I will be asking alot of questions 1st one being do I need new head bolts? Pfeener I hope you have your ears on.

Yep, you're correct. That price is way out of line. Labor for the job should be in the 15 - 20 hours range which for an indy should equate to $1,200 - $1,500. and the head, even if you needed all new valves, should be no more than $700 or so.
The head bolts can be reused one time. Now I'll probably get some flack on this from some of the other members, but here's the rational....a lot of guys say new bolts every time, but over on Volvospeed, there used to be a guy named Rich Kelly, who was a dealer mechanic and the "Volvo God". According to Rich, the bolts can be used until they exceed the max length (they stretch each time they are used) for a head bolt; which equated to one reuse of the bolts.
Do a search on here and also on Volvospeed. Search under head gasket and you'll get a ton of hits about removing and replacing the head. Not having taken it apart, it would be great if you could find another car as a reference when you're re-assembling yours.

UPDATE!
Just got a call from machine where I dropped off the Head. There are no bent valves. All that will be replaced is valve guides on the exhaust side. price $225.00. I'm currently looking for a headgasket set. Dealer wants 200.00 which is the best price so far. I will check FCP Grotton. Finally some good news!

You'll get a better price from FCP. Not surprised about not having any bent valves. Usually when they are bent it's apparent. What's really a shame is the head probably didn't have to come off. If the garage had set the crank pulley back to it's correct position it most likely would have been fine. The valve guides the machine shop is replacing is probably just a normal wear situation and not related to the valve timing problem.
Thanks. I was hoping to inquire about an idler pulley and a tensioner pulley. To see if they needed to be changed. I ended up only purchasing a timing belt tensioner and timing belt fron FCP just because I have all the parts off and I don't want to do it again anytime soon. The head gasket set was a real bargain $89. Thanks for the input.

Recieved headgasket set from Groton. I rushed the the valve stem seals to the machine shop and we are still waiting for the exhaust guides. The machine shop ordered those themselves. I will start installation of the head Monday or Tuesday. I will stay in touch.

Use only the liquid head gasket sealant for a Volvo- in other words, don't just go down and buy something from an AutoZone that the guy behind the counter says will work. The Volvo stuff is special (anaerobic). I've heard of numerous guys using something they thought was the right stuff, develop head gasket leaks and have very expensive repairs on their hands....this is an expensive little tube but very cheap insurance in the long run.
