After the overfill incident in V70XC, I discovered the difference between Accuracy and Precision. Hence, wanted a better measurement of drain, and a controlled refill.
Our MVS Fazool had hinted of Hopkins-Measu funnel in another post. For $5, it is worth it. Among many functions include markers for North American residents, i.e., ml, oz, cup, qt, and... clarity!
The 3rd drain of 850 was above 1200ml, thus refilled 1200ml, it came to one notch below Cold/max. The simple D&F task is now complete in both my cars.
Thanks ALL!

Just curious as to why you used Toyota brand ATF?? I'm not against the brand and i just happen to be a Toyota Technician presently. I use Mobil 1 ATF and Mobil 1 oil, every other fluid is Volvo brand( personal preference).E170_Driver wrote:Well, I got 7 qts left over and the original thought was to do it in some time in the future. I did 2 drain and fills; by the second time I received almost crystal clear red fluid during the drain. So my question is, should I do another drain and fill when I return from this trip on Monday? I will have 500 extra miles on the car. I realize that can't get all the original fluid out of the transmission using this method, but the combination of the original stuff not being in bad shape to begin with and that I was able to drain so much fluid during the first drain lets me believe that I diluted the old fluid pretty good with the new stuff. Any thoughts are appreciated.

That funnel you mention was the one I used - works perfect, fit in but still had some room to let air out & fill up the fluid quickly. If you are in Canada you can get it at either Princess Auto, and I've seen it at some Canadian Tires too (not online though?).

I did my fill and drain this weekend (I do this every 33,333 miles). Went to the local pick and pull and scored the tranny oil return line. Cut it so I had about 6 inches of the hose, and then went to Home Depot and bought 5 feet of hose that was a perfect slip fit. Didn't even need a hose clamp! My fill funnel is CarQuest PN 30067. It is the perfect length with the perfect diameter. You still need to pour in the oil slowly, as it will leak slightly if you rush the job. This was the easiest fill and drain, I've ever done. Pump out 2 quarts into measured 1 gallon container, then back fill 2 quarts.

I have recently aquired a 2001 XC70 with geartronic, and the question I have when I refill is, do I do a shift sequence from P to N to R to D, then do I switch it to manual and shift up 1,2,3 and back down? Is this necessary?
Thanks! Such a wealth of knowledge here!

Performed this procedure on my 2002 S60 2.4T. Very simple process, and did wonders for smoothness in shifting into Reverse and Drive. Drained and filled three times with drastic results, and at my next oil change I will do it a fourth time. I bought 12 quarts from my local Toyota dealer at $8.00 each. ouch! But still cheaper than having it done, and enjoyed the experience! Great post!

Just did this procedure on my 2000 V70 NA. It's exactly the same process and fluid amounts as my Honda CRV. Very easy. I used Castrol Transmax 3309 compliant fluid. Nutin to it. I used exactly 3 quarts. The fluid in my transmission was just nasty. My car has 143,000. I have done some reading and feel it worthy to note that Volvo fluid is not synthetic nor is the Castrol Transmax. So, Transmax seems like a great fluid at 5.38 a quart at Walmart it's a sweet deal. I wont do this procedure again till the next oil change. I also changed my oil today so in three or four months or so. I think the tranny service took like five minutes, literally.
BTW, in my Volvo and in the CRV they both take three quarts.
Would also just say that a buddy of mine that owns a shop and says that you should never flush the transmission on an older car. He says that, in his experience, suddenly going from a filthy transmission to all brand new fluid seems to kill transmissions that have a lot of miles on them. So, he liked the idea of just doing three quarts at a time and then waiting a few months before draining and filling again. Unless, you're transmission is acting up and then it's all a gamble anyway.

Thank you for the excellent guide. I completed this maintenance today. I began having rough shifts between 1st and 2nd. 2003 v70 with 111k miles. The first draining of the fluid was black and filled with fine sediment. Pretty gross. Only got about 3.75 qt out. The second draining of fluid was still pretty dark. Nowhere near as red as the photo by the OP. That said, the shifting so far seems smooth. I think I will give it a few thousand miles and then repeat at least one more changeout. Hopefully I don't have any damage that will prevent me from getting a few more years out of the car. New transmission = I'm buying a new car if we get to that point. I will read up on the forum and figure out what other maintenance I should do that may help keep this thing on the road a while longer.
The hardest part for me was figuring out where and how to jack the car up. I can't believe how far back the jack points are in front.
I'm sure I'll catch flack for it, but I used MaxLife Dexron III/Mercon ATF which is listed as Toyota T-IV compatible and lists Volvo as well for passenger car applications. But it was for sale on Sunday at my NAPA, so meh.
Thanks again, OP.

I strictly use Mobil1 oil/atf on my Volvo and Volvo brand coolant/pws/brake fluids on everything else. Draining/filling is tedious because it has to be done atleast 3 times but safer than flushing a tranny that's never been flushed out. My father-in-law believes you shouldn't disturb old tranny fluid when you buy a used vehicle w/high mileage. It's true in some cases that flushing trans fluid can do more harm than help and this is where draining/filling comes into play. I drain/fill all used vehicles that I buy and suggest the same to all my personal customers/friends/family. Mobil1 ATF is great stuff and I'd suggest using it on your Volvo for sure.

Has anyone done the drain from above using a vacuum pump through the dipstick hole? I would do a few drain and fill.
