I should have advised you to use spray to test for idle fluctuation, well done by the dealer. They earned their money on this one
Just for completeness, I took my car to a independent shop in Santa Cruz, CA called A & E Motorsports. The owner (Jeremy) is a Volvo guy and drives a V70 while his wife drives an XC90. I found him on Yelp and his shop had a 5 star review after 6 years of business! You almost never see a perfect 5 star review. So, I decided to take the car here instead of the Volvo dealer, which is a 35 minutes drive away from me.

In the end, I am glad I did it.

Yes, Robert gets the award! Although I did visually check the manifold and the torque of the bolts, there were areas that a visual from above just could not spot. I have never in my life had a gasket fail on any of the cars I have owned. I didn't even think to look for that. I was looking for cracked or worn rubber hoses and such.
How far away (under 10 minutes?) was A & E Motorsports?
Pretty close to me. I don't think it even takes me 10 minutes to get there.
Here's a link to their Yelp page. http://www.yelp.com/biz/ae-motorsports-santa-cruz-2

And a link to the shop's website: http://www.aemotorsportsc.com/

Ask for Jeremy. I was super happy with their service and will be adding another great review for them.

I'll award the Spinner Saucer to you for point grubbing

Well done everyone. 8 pages of thread to keep a nostalgic one alive.

My own 1999 was the toddler afternoon sleep mobile and it either goes to Smith College next fall :D or goes into the classifieds :(
Hey, I visited Smith College with my daughter when she was doing college tours. We also visit Boston College, Mt. Holyoke and Harvard on the same trip. Alas, she chose a west coast college, but still it's a small world.
Harvard? Why would anyone go there when there is Cornell?

I'll add AE to the good mechanics list

It's been a week now and I am glad to report that the car is running awesomely. It's back to it's old self again and there are no engine lights to deal with anymore. I am so glad that I won't have to worry about this.

One last parting shot of the family car, that is now being driven by my daughter. I look forward to the day that I can put the 300,000 mile heritage club badge on it.

Dave..start your thread and let the knowledgeable folks here chew on it

Sometimes I can contribute too, but mostly just snark or humor , which is reportedly, “ less than memorable”

So glad that this thread is still helping the community.
It's been 2 years since the solution to this post and the car is still going strong. Daughter is driving it daily to school. I've recently got new seat covers for the fronts and it's doing quite well. I got an annoying evap system leak code - again. It seems to appear like clockwork after a year or so. Something to tackle on a lazy weekend.
