On Tuesday when I was out in the 850 there was a terrible rattle coming from somewhere on the passenger side, it wasn't there last year before I tucked the car away for the winter but I had noticed it a few times this year and it was getting worse so I decided to investigate.
Pressing different parts of the door card gave various noises and my initial thought was the door bin or the interior handle as most of the noise seemed to be coming from around these areas. I removed the door card and dismantled it. The door bin top fixing was broken so I used epoxy glue to reattached it, I then used Tesa tape to cover all the surfaces that would come in contact when I put it back together.
My attention then turned to the interior door handle, all the fixings for the recess cover were snapped off and I carefully epoxied them back into place, however the handle mechanism itself was held in by one bolt and the others were hanging loose so I tightened them, no doubt this was the cause of the broken pins.
Next day when putting the recess cover back on the fixings all snapped off so I need to get new recess covers. I temporarily put it all back together and the recess cover is just placed in.
Went for a drive and I'm pleased to say the 850 is quiet as a mouse inside now, no squeaks, no rattles, it's wonderful.
Top fixing of door bin epoxied on Tesa tape applied to all contact surfaces Sadly my handle recess pins hack didn't work out All nice and quiet again ( SWMBO was operating the camera whilst I was driving)

That is UK mpg. 4.5 litres/gallon v's 3.8litres/gallon. Our 93 850 would do up to 40mpg on the highway on UK gallons, m parents borrowed our 98 V70XC and managed just about that as well on UK gallons.
The 96 850 in the junkyard has a light grey interior unfortunately.

On UK gallons, we used to see a regular 30mpg around Calgary and occasional trips outside the city at 3000+ft altitude. On highways my buddy gets around 7l/100km in the 2000 V70 SE NA I sold him with the 5 speed auto. That is close to 40 mpg UK gallon. My R seldom gets close to 30 mpg on the same basis and in the city only gets 20-22 mpg on a good day.

Ouch! My automatic Chevrolet Suburban with a 5.3l V8 and Toyota 4Runner V8 both get better mileage than that!! I think a whole 14l/100km is about normal for the Toyota, even on mostly short runs around town where it takes about a week to warm up to normal operating temps. I recently had the original (read terrible and restrictive) cracked exhaust manifolds with tubular headers and high flow cats and Y pipe. This supposedly adds 45 bhp AND improves fuel consumption on long runs. Time will tell! Mind you it has to run on 91 octane/premium to get that which I do anyway.
Even the 'R' with supposedly over 310 bhp with a Rica tune does better than that. It is about 12/100km around town.

Spent 2 hours cleaning, for 10 minutes worth of painting. All for something that really won't be seen.
Not sure that this is a curable condition.
