Writing up all of your dash repair work in a single thread would be hugely valuable. Considering how involved your job is, it probably covers every repair anyone could do to their dash. I know it would help me when I eventually pull my dashes to repair them.

Is it possible to drive without the dash pad in? Connect the steering wheel, airbags, instrument cluster, etc? Or, more realistically, is the car vulnerable to water intrusion with the dash pad out? I could pull my dash for a week but the car is parked outside.

No risk of water intrusion but I don’t think you can drive without all the electrical ss connected. The passenger air bag will also be inop.

The passenger airbag is attached to the dash pad. You might be able to carefully remove it, but it will throw a code without it connected and as Abscate says, it then disables your airbag system until it is connected and the code reset.

There used to be a really good write up on dash removals, but currently I can't find it.

I may not get all the photos I need for a comprehensive write up as I am way behind getting the car back up and running. I have a friends 850 waiting for a water pump and I need to get the R out of the way of the hoist to do that. I'll see what I can do though.

Thanks. I'm so old fashioned preferring books and forum posts that I always forget to check for videos.

When I drain my 98 V70XC transmission, only 3 liters of atf come out each time. I put 3 liters back in, and it shows up at the top of the "hot" mark on the dipstick.
97 850 GLT and 94 base model, a little over 3.5 liters come out, put 3.5 liters back in, and it shows up at the top of the "hot" mark. Any reason for this? 98 doesn't have any problems shifting, but I don't know where the half a liter difference comes from.

I think you have to drive it, and hold it in each gear for a bit, in order for the fluid to fill all the passages and cavities. On my P2, I topped it off twice after a drain & fill.

Also found out my torque wrench was 11% off compared against a digital torque adapter and not accurate at all at that 12-20 ft lbs range Volvo loves to use. Now I'm a bit worried about the 40 13 ft-lbs cam cover bolts I used it on...

For some of those lighter torque figures I usually use an inch-pound wrench. While not proven by scientific method, my guess is that a torque wrench tends to be a bit more accurate in the upper half of the range.

I believe the upper and lower 10% or so of a torque wrench's range is where you'll have less accurate readings. Particularly in the lower 10%, I would think. At least for a spring/click-type.
