Misha, I think it stands for "room temperature vulcanization". At least that's what I read somewhere. But I don't know if it refers to any standard silicone caulk or only some specific type.

I have successfully used "liquid tape" for this type of application before. It brushes on and then forms a water tight seal. I got it at Wal-Mart in the automotive section so I imagine you could get it at an auto parts store as well if they don't have Wal-mart where you are.

Thanks for your reply ... it gives me some "lateral thinking" ideas.

To answer the question ... the ABS is definitely not working - I had tested it on a number of occasions and the wheels definitely lock solid when I apply the brakes on a loose surface, in the wet or just very hard (simulated emergency).

I did "resoldering work" on my abs module succesfully, thanks to great writing and explanations! :D
My abs/tracs light was on occasionnaly and more often in warm weather, but situation was getting worst.
When i installed fixed abs module i started car and abs/tracs light was on but as soon as i went down the street it was off.
The funniest part of all this resoldering work was when i discovered that guys in the store where i bought silicone sold to me silicone for ovens(high teperature silicone for up to 1200 degrees celsius). It's not gummy or jelly like it suppose to be,it is more like cement when dry. I discovered that when i opened it and start sealing my abs module(i'm talking about outside sealing, inside is normal silicone).I was really :x when i discovered this!
Anyway...i sealed module with this "cement silicone" and let it stand overnight for 15-16 hours to dry and installed it today.
Visibly...it just looks like normal silicone, but on touch it's literraly like cement(like the one between ceramic pads in bathrooms).
The only thing that matters is that module is well sealed(even with this)and it's working!

Before working on the ABS module, it might be good to check and make sure the wheel sensors are tightly connected and have the right resistance. The resistance should be about 1100 ohms and infinite to ground from the connectors. When working on my front suspension, I found the connectors to the front ABS sensors were loose and and wires brittle and were causing the ABS/tracs light to come on. I cut the wires back to good metal and soldered copper wires and used common electrical connectors to hook to the sensors. This seems to work OK as long as the connectors are tight. With the rear sensors, the sensors have to be checked from inside the car where the sensor wires come out. For the wagon, they come out to a yellow connector under the panel directly behind the rear seat.

98 V70 T5
I just went through this repair. My experiences are worth sharing. I got a rebuilt unit from FCP Groton for $180.

Getting the first connector off was not obvious to me. It took some time to figure out that there were two little clips at the side of the connector that had to be slid up before freeing the connector.

I also could not free the top air hose from the air filter unit without unscrewing it from the unit. Victor has good instructions on how to remove the various components in a turbo to make the repair easier.

Despite having the E5 Torx, one of the bolt heads was stripped. It may have been from a previous owner. The only solutions was to grind the top off with a Dremel, which took about 20 minutes. The other three were quite easy. Remember that you only need to use the ratchet to loosen them initially. After that you can just hold the Torx head in fingers to remove them all the way. I put the new unit on with only 3 bolts holding it in place. It seems quite tight, but does anyone know where you can get another bolt?

Oh, and the ABS TRACS lights went off immediately.

Those bolts are hard to come by- even Victor says he doesn't have spares. I think your best bet is to find a junked 850 at a bone yard, take your E5 torx with you and get one or more off...If you then take the ABS control module to their front desk and tell them that the unit is in high demand and that they should have it up front where customers won't have to go out and get it, you'll probably make a friend there! I've done this with a few parts at junk yards and now I get several things free or almost free when I visit them. Anyway- just a thought- a lot of work for a few screws, but it may be worth it- what goes around comes around.

New member, first post but have been reading a while. Dark green 1996 850 GLT 4dr, 159K miles, entire life spent in Buffalo NY and no rust yet! Had the ABS/Tracs light come on since 2008, only in hot weather. Just saying thanks to this web site and Victor Rocha for the great info on diagnosing the ABS/Tracs system, found it was the module. Pulling/replacing the module was easy following the info here. Victor's repair was quick and now ABS module works perfectly.
