Re: Volvo Radio Light Bulb Replacement
I did something a little different. I actually replaced the bulbs themselves. Not that hard to pull them from the base. Just good eyesight & a steady hand. Cheaper than running off to the Honda Dealer. Just your local Radio Shack.

Excellent instructions, what a kind gentleman's act of generosity. I did it myself thanks to your advice. THANK YOU again.
I just finished replacing all 5 bulbs on my 98 S70 GLT - this way I won't have to do it again for a long, long time. Start to finish in 30 minutes including taking it out and reinstalling it and recoding. Awesome step by step instructions. The right side tab was a bit tricky to manuver over. Be patient and just be careful putting the face plate on and making sure the pullouts are fully extended. I did mine on a white towel to make sure I did not scratch up the table or lose a screw. if you have the radio on it's side you don't have to disconnect the face plate at all. Purchased the bulbs at the local Honda dealer PN 35505-S84-NO1 $1.82 each. (from another posting on this site)

Just replaced all 5 as well. Bulbs were $5.30 CAN at Honda.
The radio and the dash look much better with lights on
Is there another bulb to be replaced in order to light up the LCD so that I can see what radio station / CD track is playing.
If so, I am guessing this will call for removing the PCB...
Does anyone have a part number for this bulb and where it might be able to be purchased in Canada excluding Volvo dealership... ?
Thanks you.

Answering my own question...
Radio Shack part number 272-1092. In the case of replacing the other 5 panel lights, you can use the Radio Shack lights and transfer them into the Volvo black 1/4 twist bases. In the case of the LCD light replacement, you simply install the bulb into a base which require no wire twisting.
For the 5 light on PCB board, I did not want to do all the disassemble and reassembly since Honda makes the part number 35505-S84-N01 and saved me from working out the old bulbs and working in the new... well worth it even though the neck is very snug fitting these into the respective holes... it is still worth the added money.
For the LCD light, I suggest going with the Radio Shack 272-1092 since you have to fit the base (simply by threading them straight through) just the same.
I used the blue cover on the LCD bulb but found them to make the Honda bulbs too dim on the rest of the radio... so... the Honda buls 35505-S84-N01 remained naked and give off a sharp orange tint to the radio controls and looks rather good.
Anyhow, here is the rest of the process.
Removed the PCB
Unsolder the two top corner retaining legs on the silver cover.
Turned the two middle legs to allow the silver cover to bend forward.
I was not concerned to unsolder the lower legs since I was just going to bend the silver cover back (this worked fine)
Unsolder the present bulb which is on the left side of the display. Same side as the EQ.
Remove the blue bulb cover so as to be able to add to new bulb. Display is too bright without it.
Once the bulb was out, I transferred the black base to my new Radio Shack bulb, installed the blue bulb cover from the removed bulb and routed the tails of the new bulb through the respective holes on the PCB.
Solder down the new bulb being careful not to cause any shorts or damaged circuits.
Bent down the silver cover as it was place originally. I did not re-solder the corners in case I ever need to go in there again.
Line up the two middle legs and then half turn all (4) legs at the top of there silver cover.
It was as simple as that.
I have found that when removing the PCB or replacing it, you might loosen some of the lights without even noticing.
Check that all lights are snug before putting the radio back together.
I can (will) supply pictures shortly.
Just wanted to close my part of the post before letting it remain unsolved for too long
Thanks everyone

I just bought a CD deck for my '98 v70, all bulbs ar burnt except readout. Called Honda, they want $6.30 a piece, radio shack wants $4.99 for 2 bulbs. Gotta love Canadian pricing! I paid $30 for the deck, less than the cost of 5 bulbs. I'm gonna try Mouser.

The old deck has 3 good ones, I'll use those and replace the other 2.

I know others have said they had problems with radio shack bulbs but I have used the two pack of the small capsule bulbs in a few radios and I know one of these is a car I did 5 years ago and it is driven a lot with lights on 100% of the time and none of those have expired yet.
