None of the scratches look that deep on the scope however it does show a bit of wear. I am thinking that both perspective engines would need a valve stem seal job.

If the cross hatching is clear across all walls of the cylinder then would a handful of sidewall marks be something to be worried about?
Robert has had the head off his 850 R twice for valve seals, and it has something north of 450k on the bottom end. Once you have the engine opened up you'll be able to tell better how deep and how many, but a minor scuff or 2 shouldn't be a big deal.

Thanks for the advice fellas. From my scoping there was zero rust in the cylinders nor any foreign debris. The scratches i saw seemed superficial and did not appear to wear through the cross hatching. I know i had an oil burn problem on one NA engine but i suspect it was caused by terrible valve stem seals. Ill crank the cars and do a compression test when time permits and make a decision based off that.

I've been chasing a recurring CEL for the xc90 since finishing the head rebuild. I though I had advanced the exhaust cam 1 tooth too much. I keep getting an "cam position sensor exhaust signal too high" in Vida. I move the cam back 1 notch with no change. After some googling decided to check the vvt solenoid. It was siezed. After a thorough cleaning and clearing the codes I have not seen it throw a CEL in 2 trips. Finger crossed its fixed! It's an easy job and I was able to do it without snap ring pliers.

Well, tough week. Did a big trip up to Albany to recover parts and such, and got into a multi car wreck in CT that totalled Shagg. Still runs but not driveable.
