Rad Hoses Blowing Apart
Rad Hoses Blowing Apart
Just wondering if anyone has any input on this. It happened on my 2008 XC70 3.2. My upper rad hose blew apart a couple of weeks ago. So, I replaced it with another one that I had. It lasted a couple of days, before it split. I replaced it again and it split again. So now, I know that its an over pressure situation. I ordered a new hose, thermostat and rad cap. When I pulled the old thermostat off, it came out in pieces, so obviously it was done. But, after looking at it, it appeared to be stuck wide open. This seems to be counter intuitive to me. If it was wide open, could it be responsible for an over pressure situation? Why did the cap not blow off the excessive pressure? Anybody have any ideas? FYI, I put it all back together with the new parts and we will see if it happens again.

I would do what you listed.
And I would caution you to use original parts for the Thermostat and the Hoses.
Aftermarket Thermostats are know to fail early (I've seen the video but I couldn't determine the manufacturer of the failed part but it was definitely not a Volvo or Land Rover part)
If it is cheaper you can use Land Rover parts. The 3.2 was built at a FORD plant in the UK and installed in several Volvo's and the LR2.
Typically Volvo is cheaper but not always.
Take care

2010 S80 (with a Land Rover Thermostat)
2008 LR2 (with Volvo coolant hoses)
PS the pressure in the system should be roughly equal everywhere unless you restrict the flow. A broken Thermostat could restrict the flow enough to cause the pressure in the upper hose to fail. You can check the flow from bleed pipe on the cylinder head to the reservoir. If this spraying like a fire hose then you have a problem it should flow like a water fountain (Drinking fountain?)

Very nice.
Thanks for the update.
You have fixed letter A
Typical repairs for high mileage 3.2
A) Thermostat – replaced mine at 10 years (also replaced two coolant hoses)
