MAF Question

Post by azureblue »

I had the local car parts place run a scan and they reported no codes. I knew it was time to change the plugs and I did, going to the Bosch cross reference for the stock plat plugs. Is it possible for the MAF to not work properly and not throw a code?

I went looking for replacement MAF elements for my 2001 V70 T5, and found several numbers. I am not sure what is in the car now, is stock, so I am asking which element should be there? Much thanks

And if you have not thrown a few bucks at Robert Spinner, please do so....

Pretty much,no. If the MAF isn’t working right the mixture won’t be right, the OXS sensor will detect that, send the fuel trims out of range, and voila, you have codes.

The fuel trim has a working range of about 10-20% before it codes so a MAF ERROR larger than this will likewise code

I would leave it alone, no cleaning ,either

I drove my XC70 about 200 miles with MAF disconnected. The car triggered error only on the following start. I think, turbo engine relies more on MAP sensor (measures both air pressure and temperature after intercooler).

Also the fuel trims didn't move a hair, I monitor vital car sensors at all times via my "tiny VIDA": https://github.com/vtl/volvo-ddd

MAF is after the air filter, and first in air-fuel tango. Cleaning up airbox replacing air filter, and then spray cleaning with MAF cleaner can be steps before the next step.

With the age and mileage, the entire air intake (all pipes and sensors between airbox and throttle body) is up for an overhaul.
