Transmission problem for 1995 850 GLT

Post by prieth »

Hello Volvo Forum Folks. I hope you can help me out.
I live in Missouri. Car was made for USA. Mileage is 100,000. I never had a transmission problem until this winter. Problem is that when the outside temperature is about 45 degrees or lower, the transmission will not shift into 2nd. I have to drop the gearshift down from "Drive" into "3", then it will shift--I enter the highway 5 minutes later--At 60 miles/hour, the RPM's are at 3500. I then put the gearshift back in "Drive", but nothing happens immediately. Depending on how cold it is (temperature fluctuates between 50 and 20 degrees F), the transmission will shift into overdrive 5 to 10 minutes later. Once this happens, it appears the transmission is warmed up enough, and the transmission will shift normally. That is, until I shut the engine off and it gets cold again. What is the problem? Thanks in advance.

I suppose we need more information like whether you have the dreaded up arrow light at any time during these episodes or whether you have a check engine light on.

I, my-own-self have a stick so if it doesn't shift it means that I froze solid and can't move the lever but have you checked the threads in the repair database on flushing the transmission fluid. It seems to work wonders.

Ad Astra Per Aspra - oops that's Kansas.

Salus populi suprema lex esto.

Lee,

The up arrow light comes on sometimes, but not always. The Check Engine Light is always on. I've taken the car to my Volvo mechanic. He suggested a tranny flush, but expressed doubt that it would work. He said more likely is that he could get me a used tranny for $2,000. Mention of this led me to this forum.

Flushing has been reported to do wonders and it cost one whole heck of a lot less than a new transmission - as in a couple of gallons of transmission fluid. Try it. It might actually work. If not you gave it your best shot.

EDIT:

Since you have a '95 have you dumped the codes from port A-1, A-2, and A-6. A-1 is the transmission and A-2 and A-6 are the engine. Dump the codes and post them. Instructions to do it are here:
