peeling paint on strip molding

Post by camper guy »

I have noticed another problem on my 95 850 Turbo. The car is silver and there is a black strip that runs along the roof line between the doors. The paint is seperating exposing the chrome underneath. All the paint is there, is there something I can use to "glue" it down till spring or am I doomed and will have to live with the chrome when it flakes off till I can get it painted. Or would it be cheaper to just have those two strips replaced?

Similar thing happened on my 93 850, although I would hardly call it paint... more like a plastic coating that cracks and starts to peel away. I thought about replacing them but didn't feel like I was ready for yet another dealer gouge. So, I used a razor blade and cut the cracked part off, lightly sanded the aluminum looking metal underneath, and then spray painted it black.

Does it look better? yes... and no. It does, but I only got around to painting one, so that looks a tad wacky, but when both are done, it will look fine.

Volvospeed had a whole topic on removing the strips and then painting them with primer and black engine paint. Sounds simple? Think I'll wait until spring though, I don't have a garage.

I have had the same problem with my 93-850. I made a post asking for suggestions and interestingly enough one reply said that using black electrical tape as a cover for the strips worked as a cheap alternative to buying new ones. I intend but have not as yet tried it. New ones are rather pricey.

I would like to check out the volvospeed article, does anyone have a link to it?

Thanks

Can't find anything on roof strips at Volvospeed. But this has several tips:

Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!
