Chirp or whistle from engine at idle

Post by FireFox31 »

My 2000 V70 with 225k miles has developed a chirp or whistle from the engine while running at idle. The sound is loudest near the intake manifold by cylinder three, the oil fill cap, and the dipstick. Yet, removing the cap does not stop the sound, so it's likely not pressure from the PCV system (which I cleaned last year).

Here's a video of the chirping.

I completed a compression test and the numbers were solid and similar to my previous test in 2021. Cylinder 2 had an odd chirp on each crank, but last time that happened on cylinder 3, so maybe I installed the tester slightly wrong.

The day before I first noticed it, I had the fuel rail out to swap the injectors in cylinder 1 and 4. Could it be caused by injectors seated incorrectly in the manifold? Is there a best practice method for reinstalling the fuel rail (ie: lubrication on the o-rings)? Thanks.

Sounds more mechanical than vacuum, can you take off the serp belt and retest?

I suspect it's a bearing, like maybe the serpentine belt tensioner pulley, or maybe where it pivots.

^^ Agree with these two. that's mechanical. Or you have a very musical engine.

Without a serpentine belt, how long can I idle the car without causing problems? How far/long could I drive it? Thanks.

Others may correct me, but I'd say none. No water pump, right? Maybe a couple of minutes, just to test the noise.

The serpentine belt drives the power steering pump, the AC compressor, and the alternator. I'd guess you could drive it as far as your battery will last, and you can muscle the steering without getting too hot from no AC?

I don't really think you need to drive it for diagnosis though, do you?

On my truck, and other vehicles the water pump is driven by the accessory belt/belts, but the inline 5 Volvo engines run it with the timing belt, so there's no overheating issue with removing the serpentine belt. I think that's common on engines with timing belts.... and unfortunately, on some timing CHAIN Ford engines..... chain, so oil bath....bad things happen when the pump leaks.

About one hour drive with a good battery. You could probably idle it for 3-4 hours
