13g to 16t swap

Post by Petskoi »

So I have the 13g with a straight housing(if its the right word) and I have a 16t with an angled housing. What volvo model downpipe do I need to buy to make it work? In my understanding I should buy like a -99 t5 downpipe right? Or is it an easy job to modify the stock dp to work?
Otherwise the swap should be just bolt on with the same lines?

Angled DP would be the easiest and best option I think. If you are getting a new one anyways and already have the angled turbo.

Not a lot of options with this. I wouldn't waste money on anything with the straight exhaust flange. As hausmeister says, you already have the angle set-up, so I'm sure you're going with that. I just went through this a little bit ago, but with a 15g. You used to be able to buy just a downpipe alone from OBX but I couldn't find a source for them anymore. Then there are a couple of way expensive turbo back exhaust systems out there. I ended up having to bite the bullet and buy an IPD system which came with a 3" angled downpipe. Unfortunately I think they just had a price increase on their system.

Thanks for your replies, otherwise I could just buy a dp but as I have the awd and all the downpipes I can find are for the fwd, I have to play welder

TME (sweden) makes an AWD downpipe, it's good stuff but it aint cheap

Wasnt able to find an european shop with a listing

A stock angled downpipe would be the 2nd best solution.

The 16T should bolt fine, if it's from a 99+ you might have to play with the coolant ports plug (-98 have IN on the engine side, OUT on the firewall while 99+ have both on the firewall side. Any turbo should have 3 ports with one plugged)

Hi there, I came across this post so I thought I would try my luck
I'm thinking of swapping my factory 13g turbo to a 16T and I have a few questions.
1. Can I just buy a 16T compressor/housing and use it on the factory turbo? Will it give me the same improvement as installing a complete 16T?
2. Can I do a straight swap or will modifications be needed?
3. I bought the IPD Boost Control valve but didn't notice any difference, is a special set up required?
4. Should I get a manual boost control valve?

Thank you in advance

Luis

1. I don't really understand this question. Are you asking about switching the internals of the turbo ? In any case, what you want is a complete 16T. Keep in mind that you need to have a different tune in the ECU for you to notice any difference between the two turbos.
2. They bolt up the same way, so no mods required.
3. I have heard nothing but bad regarding the IPD boost control valve. Pierburg is a better choice. Might be originally for a Porsche.
Not sure, so check, but #99660 or # 515500 is in my notes.
4. If you like. There is a link here on the site on how to make one.

Did it myself a few months back.

1. Absolutely not
2. Make sure it is a -01 16T and it should bolt on fine (except exhaust, which needs an angle flange downpipe. If FWD, get the OBX system off eBay. If AWD, you're SOL and should find a 15G instead so it'll bolt on unless you're really handy with a welder, since nobody makes AWD downpipes)
3. IPD boost valve is absolute trash, get rid of it and put the stock one back.
4. No, you shouldn't. You'll break something in short order

Thank you so much for the info. I believe my car is a straight flange not an able one, can I still use the 16T turbo with a straight flange?

My understanding is that you can use the straight flange, but the angled has better flow.
And I believe Vast Tuning also sells downpipes.
