Quick oil question....
Quick oil question....
2006 XC70- 120k miles. The last two oil changes I was able to use Mobil 1 0-40 (European spec). Prior to that, every 3-5K I used Mobil 1 5-30. I cannot find 0-40 locally...I do have a case of 5-30 in the house. Any downside to going back to the 5-30 for this winter (New York)? It would make my life easier, as I can just change the oil this weekend. Don't know why the auto suppliers do not have the 0-40. On Amazon its available, but more costly. Your thoughts . A.

My S80 used to run dealership install of Castrol synthetic 10w30 half the year and 5w30 the other half until I switched to Redline 5W30. For the 2004 model stable ambient temperature above 86° required 10w30. My dealer changed grades per Volvo's requirement without issues for my car. I can't imagine using 5W30 in the New York winter would be a problem. You did say it used 5W30 3 changes back without problems correct? June

You are better off to just get a 5W-40 for use year round. Unless you are doing heavy city driving, towing or lots of miles you really can go a year with a change if it's under 5 to 6K miles. Second best oil that I've tried with Castrol 0W-40, 5W-40 and 5W-50 a very close 3rd.

5w-30 for a cycle (including this winter) would be fine.
I also prefer the Rotella T6 5w-40.

I switched to Pennzoil EURO 5W-40 many years ago on our Volvos. We drive 7-10k miles per car a year in urban traffic, therefore ONE oil and filter change per year around this of the year.

0w40 states good for -40 to +40 Celcius, what's the issue? No crankcase heaters on either of my vehicles.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I'm sure summers exceed 86 F and there are extreme winters in Ohio. Every manufacturer has to take into consideration EPA, Break In Period and potentially how well the engine is worn at 100, 200K etc. The 5W30 is a good balance but they also tell you to use a heavier weight after 86 F.
One chart is for an 04 S60 & S60R the other for a 2009 C30 T5. Oil does improve over the years and engineers make changes. It's up to 40W for the 5 cylinder. The manual covers the manufacturer from liability as they make recommendations and let the consumer decide on what oil to use. The 5W40 and 0W40 provides better overall protection and one oil for the entire fleet regardless of climate in both extremes.
Hot &Temperate Climate, Best Fuel Economy and Extreme Operating Conditions in Hot & Cold are all listed for the consumer to decide what to use for the C30. The lawyers have to work at Volvo to limit their liabilities. They know about people exercising their turbos
