communication tool , root element missing? no dice button

HI, im not that great with computers, better with getting my hands dirty and fixing the xc90 and various cars! so go easy....
ive got a windows 10pro laptop with the oracle VM set up on it and windows 10 vida. its always worked ok but when ive gone to use it today the communication tool is missing and i get "root element" is missing? ive had a quick read through various posts on here but get confused with the "computer talk" of how to fix?! should i delete everting and start again and re install or is there a "easy fix". The advise ive read on here is a bit confusing as to where to do it, ie if i do theses patches, do i do it on the laptop or on the virtual machine? and if i do download lets say a patch from the volvodiag site will it just go to the right place and "work"? arrghhh!
hopefully someone can help so i can reset the oil counter for the auto gearbox and check it hasnt got anymore codes for the gearbox!
im going out to work on my non technical 205 gti now...... lol
