I have read that driver side CV axles on P2 cars are sometimes difficult to remove because the axle splines do not receive lubrication when mated into the automatic transmission. As a result the axle splines and retaining ring can rust inside the transmission, making it difficult to compress the retaining ring when prying the axle out.
My car is a 2006 V70 with M56 manual transmission and original drivers side CV axle. Does the M56 provide gear oil lubrication to the CV splines, unlike the automatic transmission ? If so, does that mean that M56 drivers side CV axles can usually be popped out without problems ? If anyone has removed the drivers side CV axle from an M56 V70 or S60, what tools did you use (pry bars, chisels, axle popper) ?
Thanks,
Mike

I can only speak for the M66 transmission, but the axle spline is in direct contact with the transmission fluid. I used Volvo tool 9997466 from https://www.volvospecialtools.com. It was super easy. The axles is recessed in the transmission and it is very hard to get a pry bar behind the axle unlike the automatic transmission.
The tool push bolt are resting on the outer ribs of the transmission and put grease on the clamping and push bolts.

Search for "jimmy57" trick to Rotate, then tap (I use Cold Chisel with some cardboard protection), then Rotate, tap.
The idea is to rotate until the open end of the C-clip faces downward.
I add a bit of grease to the splines during re-installation.

Thanks for the information. The official Volvo CV axle removal tool 9995681 might be available at volvospecialtools.com. I wonder if it has any advantages over chisels or a generic axle popper ? I need to look under the car and see what the clearances look like for a chisel or other prying tool. On P2 V70, the CV axle for M56 manual trans is about 1/2 inch longer than the axle for automatic transmission. I think that means the back of the inner CV joint will be1/2 inch further in from the wheel hub. I dont know if the back surface of the inner CV will be harder to reach with a prying tool compared to an auto trans car.

Hi
I own a 2002 volvo s60 BT5204T5 engine FWD. (5 speed manual) I recently did slave cylinder/clutch kit/dual mass flywheel. To complete the work I decided to drop the subframe and remove both axles entirely as I fitted new lower arms along with other suspension parts. No special tool was required for me. I used pry bar set and long flat screwdriver too. It popped out just fine. Also used the Haynes Manual I bought many years back. Carefully worked it out from two opposite positions with the bars/screwdriver. I hope I understood your question well. It is the connection between the drive shaft and transmission where the drive shaft seal is.
