2006 S60 2.5T AWD: how much force is needed to secure a compressed coil spring (for safety purposes)?

Post by FMradio »

Hi :)
In the future, I will be assembling new front strut assemblies for my car from the individual parts (reusing my old springs), so I'll need to use a spring compressor to compress the coil springs for assembly. I've familiarized myself with some safety info about using a spring compressor.

I've heard horror stories of spring compressors failing and letting a compressed spring jump out and cause injuries. I would like to add ratchet straps onto the springs while I am compressing them as a failsafe to prevent the spring from rocketing out if the spring compressor somehow let go. (Heard this idea online)

Would a ratchet strap with 10,000 lbs breaking force, or 2 ratchet straps with 5,000 lbs breaking force be able to keep a compressed Volvo S60 coil spring from springing out and hurting me? I grabbed the 10,000 lbs figure off of a Jeep forum https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/compr ... ap-105362/ though it's a completely different vehicle so it may be totally irrelevant.

Thank you, Andy

The good spring compressors have safety retainers that prevent the spring from getting away, like this one

For about $50 you can get the next model up with a positive spring clamp.

Using straps is better than nothing, but a shock rating isn’t likely to be as high a static load fading, figure a factor of 3x less.

You can estimate the compression load by measuring spring compression on car, loaded and unloaded, then using Hookes law to determine the rough spring constant

I use 2 sets of compressors. You can fit 3, even 4 compressors on the regular springs.
I posted some photos in forum (S60 and XC90).

I have these. They grab the coil with a locking pin so it can't slip out or off.
