From water pump to SRS

Post by azureblue »

And now the water pump is replaced, I have a "SRS need immediate attention" light. It came on after maybe 30 minutes of driving the car. This came on, along with the turn signals blinking erratically, the windows not going up and down, or part way, the child proof lock button locked on. I wiggled the under seats connectors, and I thought that fixed everything but the SRS warning stayed on. SO I disconnected the battery for 30 minutes and that didn't solve anything. Turn signals work, then they don't and the SRS light stays on.
Ideas?

SRS codes are sticky and have to be cleared with a reader, battery disconnect won’t work

iCarSoft 2.0 reader for Volvo can be had on Amazon for ~$150 and tell you what the code is and clear it. Lower cost than a dealer trip.

I kind of remembered that. Mostly I was wondering if there was anything common to the warning and the blinkers and windows misbehaving..

How is your battery?

Did you remove the battery when working on your car? Sometimes playing with electrical stuff with the battery can set the SRS light. Having said that, I can't think of anything that replacing the water-pump would set that code, or affect the other stuff.

Did you remove alternator or it's wires during the water pump work? If so, check for loose connections/ground. Weak batteries can also cause strange problems.

The alternator stayed in. I changed the upside down intake manifold snorkel pipe (intercooler to intake manifold) , too, but that was an easy job - if that has anything to do with it. I'll feel around for loose wires. The odd thing is it's just those 2 things that are affected. The heater fan works great, interior lights all steady, locks work, seat moors work, radio, wipers, etc. I originally thought it was a relay and circuit that comes on after the engine starts. Now trying to find someone who can erase the SRS code...

Car starts quickly, every time. The blinker / window lift is sporadic, much like there is a loose connector / relay somewhere, affecting both and the SRS warning system. I checked the underhood fuse box and the 12V connector lug, and everything is down and tight. BTW, the heater fan, sunroof, interior lights all work. On my chore run today, everything worked fine for maybe 30 minutes, then the blinkers suddenly started blinking erratically again. Then they stopped altogether and teh windows would not go up and down. Then erratic, then working fine a couple of times.. Is there a connector / relay common to all of this?

Edit:
Definitely some relay that drops when key is turned to position II. Using the turn signals as a test, sometimes it blinks correctly for a while, then goes into spasms. If I turn the car off and back to II, sometimes the TSs will work, sometimes they don't even blink. Repeating on / off sometimes gets the TS back to working right. I THINK I here some relay in the back chattering when the TR and windows work intermittently. Like clicking when the TS blink erratically. But I can't hear directionality well. I know it's not coming from the blinker relay under the passenger compartment fuse box. And the orange warning triangle does not come on right away when key is turned to II. A few seconds, then it comes on. The key in ignition chime doesn't always work, either, and it acts up when the TSs etc. act up. So, is there some relay that controls power when key is in Position II?

I wiggled all of the relays by the tailgate to make sure they are seated, but that had no effect..

So I think the SRS warning went off because power did not go to the control module when the key is in Position II, so the warning was triggered. And I can't think of anything during repairs that caused this...

a stethoscope will find the chattering relay of you can't feel it, have someone cycle the key.

Thanks - Could the ignition switch be the cause? I'm trying to find a list of what is on in Position I and in Position II, to maybe narrow down the problem. Like is there a relay dedicated to switch Position II?
