Refurbishing my AC: what to replace ?

Post by Goupil »

It's gonna be another hot summer, and after 4 years with no A/C I could do with some cold

The situation: the AC circuit on my 98 V70 has been open for an unknown amount of time, was like that when I bought it. I suspect the compressor was cooked and the previous owner never bothered to replace it.

I have the whole system from a parts car that had a working A/C, I will use at least the compressor and condenser from those as they are known working.

Things I plan on buying brand new:
- a kit of seals (any brands to avoid ?)
- a new receiver dryer

What else should I get while I'm at it ?
Do I need to somehow clean the system of impurities that could have entered it ?

Blow it out with compressed air or nitrogen. Replace evaporator, dryer, all o-rings, make sure to vac that sucker with a vacuum pump for at least a half hour once you establish a good vacuum. Also be prepared to replace the oil charge since you're replacing the compressor. The condenser usually on these doesn't go unless the vehicle had a front end collision.... Your mileage may vary as with all things in life...

Replacing the evaporator is really fun in these as basically the entire front of the cabin needs to be removed. Steering wheel, whole dash, everything, then the HVAC module with evaporator can be removed. It's no fun...

In addition to what has been mentioned, it is a real swine to access but the orifice tube #14 should get replaced as it is an expansion valve and can stick or get plugged.

Also recommend replacing the valve core #20 as they can leak with age.
