Unfortunate new Volvo owner! (98 V70 AWD)

Post by Culito »

Hello everyone, through a series of unfortunate circumstances, I am a new owner of a 200k+ mile '98 V70. Seems it was thoroughly (mechanically) abused before I got it, so I'm picking away at it. No rust or major body damage though!

As bought: Power steering pump about to come apart, rotten tires and a dead fuel pump. Sat under a tree for a few years, so there was tree junk everywhere.

I hacked a hole to put in the new fuel pump.

It was smoking badly so I did the ol' PCV service.

A now familiar sight for my neighbors.

Got the power steering pump replaced, along with new a new tensioner.
Put a few miles on it, and it started belching oil everywhere. These were the culprit:

They were so rotten they basically had already uninstalled themselves.

The next huge puddles were caused by a bad steering rack, so...

Got it from Detroit Axle. Lifetime warranty - we'll see what happens.

The ABS started freaking out, so I took out the ABS module and re-soldered a bunch of connections. Also found this:

So I soldered that back up. ABS / TRACS works fine now.

What's that smell?

Both parking brake cables are broken. The brakes were making a horrible noise, so I "deleted" the parking brakes for now. Fixed!

As it sits right now. I got some new shoes, and traded wheels with a friend:

I also:
Cleaned everything
"Uninstalled" headliner, cleaned fiberglass shell.
New double-DIN stereo install (in progress)
Fixed some vac leaks
Replace a bunch of dead dash lights
Black front turn signal lenses (old ones were broken)
Seafoam treatment

To do:
The new fuel pump is loud. Like unbearably loud. I don't think I can handle it. The AWD fuel pump is shaped weird and Volvo units are unavailable, so I might have to hack in an external pump somehow.
-Alignment
-Still lots of blow-by. I have an aux PCV system in mind.
-The Nivomats sag. I'm going to lower the front an inch-ish to the dismay of my wife.
-Lots more, I'm sure.
-Maybe drive it?

Nice looking ride, keep plugging away at it, you're almost there.
Everybody's friend Robert did a fuel pump mod on his daily, at around the 420k mark:

His is an 850, but fitting the aftermarket pump is the same idea.

If you are planning to fix the parking brakes at some point, DO NOT loose the expander and the little chamfered pin that holds it to the cable. Those are no longer available new!

Bag and tag!!

Should add that many further north would kill for a pair of rear brake dust plates in the condition yours are in. Again a long NLA item for AWD P80 cars.

I've spent hours watching Robert's vids, I swear he's seen and done everything on these. Gonna watch that now.

I have the expander, but the little pin dropped into my driveway and thus into another dimension.. I'll keep looking.

Looks great and you've done some amazing work. Is that the blue green exterior? What's the paint code. Of course, it looks best with Columba wheels on it!

We can’t get them at all over here. Can you tell us how much they are? We might put together a group buy if you are willing?

Op- if you search my Kat Resurrection thread you will find a source for the OE fuel pump insert, which has to be built into the unique AWD cartridge .they are about $100 as of 2022

Not on AWD cars. The pump is at the front of the 'saddle' tank which is needed to allow the prop-shaft to get to the rear. You have what is called an 'ejector pump' on the RHS front of the tank that uses pressure to transfer fuel to the LHS where th actual pump is at the front too. The access panel five you little help other than for the ABS wiring.

AWD expanders are NLA. The FWD cars are still available. However, if you can get AWD expanders, like Abscate says there may be a group buy organised.

Paint code is 412-26, "Verdigris / Tropic Green metallic"

@abscate figures I'd find another VW guy in here. You may recognize my username from theSamba.
I'm looking through both of your EL Kat threads - I'm seeing a lot of drama, but not finding the part number for the pump as of yet.

Unfortunately I trashed the original pump (should have learned my lesson on saving everything from ACVW work). I bought this:
https://www.autohausaz.com/pn/886_217_1 ... 6-23430674

It may be similar enough inside to retrofit a replacement pump unit. I think this is the only pump on a '98, correct? I've heard of "transfer pumps" but I think this is the only guy on mine.
