1997 V70 T5

Post by RobsT5 »

Hi. New member here. Have just bought a 1997 V70 T5 manual. Car had been sitting for last 3 years with blown head gasket. I have removed the old head to send off to machine shop. BUT… I managed to drop a vice and destroy the cam cover. So that means I now need a full head.
My car has B5234T3 engine. The machine shop has a rebuilt head complete with cams ready to go. That one is B5254T2 2.5 20V 2003-2008 casting number 1001837. Now the big question is, will it fit my engine? Is the cams the same? I know this one has the mounting for VVT solenoid, but that can be blocked off. Will my cam gears fit on those cams that come with that cylinder head?
I’ve had 12 Volvo’s in past and apart from S60 2.0T and XC70 2.4T all have been diesels. I’m new to this T5 party. Thought it would be fun weekend project but so far it’s just smashed knuckles and a headache. 🤣
Thanks for any help in advance.

The cam covers are matched but it is worth trying just a cam cover replacement, it’s been done successfully

How bad is the damage from the vice? Maybe it’s repairable

Finding a bare cam cover could be a challenge, and as Dr. Abscate mentions it has been done but is a roll of the dice.
As for the other head on offer, I don't think the cam profiles changed radically; some folks put normally aspirated cams on turbo motors, and fiddle with the sprockets to time them for specific tune, so there seems to be some forgiveness built into the architecture. Some of the more performance oriented crowd might be more knowledgeable, maybe try -
