V70 (2004) Battery Replacement

Post by BobbyC777 »

I went through the entire Volvo Battery & Electrical section looking for anything special I had to do before replacing my battery & didn't find any topics on this basic procedure.

The Owners Manual makes it sound straightforward with but a single note that one should "lock & unlock the car with the central locking system's remote control to reactivate such features as the power windows, moonroof, courtesy lighting, etc."

I have seen more complex suggestions in other places so am wondering what the real story is. IIRC when I replaced the battery 11 years ago I did nothing special and everything still worked.

Thanks in advance!

Bob

I've read numerous posts where one should put the ignition key in and turn to position two, then turn the headlamps on, but there is a huge sparks display when the terminals are connected due to the current required therefore I'm not keen on that method. According to the owners manual remove the key, leave the car for 5 minutes then swap them over. I changed mine a couple of weeks ago and used a spare battery with jump leads clipped to the terminals in the engine bay, no drama, no sparks, no resetting anything and everything works as it should.

@P80GLT - Thanks for sharing your technique. I wish I had a spare battery kicking around. Your Owners Manual page looks very similar to mine. Mine says wait 10 minutes after switching off the the ignition. That sounds like a long time for things to be stored but I am in no rush.

Ancient Swedish lore tells us to chicken dance on one foot and spin around four times with the key in your hand, but that’s not in the manual and has never worked for me.

I replaced my battery today following only the directions in the Owners Manual which advised to wait 10 minutes after shutting off the ignition and then, after replacement, locking and unlocking the doors with the remote. Since I got almost 11 years out of the previous battery I again went with the DieHard Gold
(H8/Group 49). The fit was perfect.

Minor sparks when I attached the negative terminal. Everything still works (I think). Even the radio presets were still there. No Anti-Theft code for the radio. I had to reset the clock - that was about it.

Thanks for your help & support.

I was feeling pretty good about 11 years until someone else mentioned selling an XC90 after 15 years with the original battery. And his wife got 13 years out of hers. I think living in the trunk makes an easier life for the battery. It's cooler there - drier too.

That was me, I sold my 13½ year old XC90 in April, it was still on its factory supplied battery. Wife's non Volvo car is 15 and still on factory battery.
