If...one were to do a power steering pump delete on the 2.4 petrol p2 engines, and go for a electric ps pump from c70/s40, is there a serpentine belt that will fit?

Secondly these pumps can draw up to 80 amps. Would this task the alternator too much?

Not to familiar with electronic methods but just run a dry pump. It should show no resistance. Worst case you remove the internals and leave it just with the bearing and pulley

Why do you want an electric pump?

Just compare the alternator amp of the P2 vs P1. I just lost the PWST reservoir cap a couple weeks ago so driving with a glove on it. First time looking under the passenger headlamp where the reservoir is in 5 years of ownership. Didn't even know it was there though I knew it was some kind of electrical steering. Thought it was just an electric motor shifting the rack gear left and right .

Well it's just a hypothetical scenario. But one reason would be consistent behavior and smoothness across all rpm range, including custom stiffness programmatically where there is none now.

Second would be very very slight hp increase. I know fart in the wind, but 2 to 5hp is not so bad as a gain.

As for the dry pump. I've held many pumps in my life and all of them had resistance when turning as the fluid is compressed inside. But most Importantly I belive a dry pump will seize, I would imagine all the components are lubricated inside, but with no oil the metals will eventually grind and seize?

Ah I see so it's a bearing then.

A P2 alternator is 140A. Not sure what a S40/C70 alternator puts out.

If you have a sacrificial pump then open it up and pull out the vanes. Should just act as a idler pulley then as no compression. There was a speed sensitive electric assisted rack I think but am not sure. Those turn a bit easier. For greater consistency consider changing your pump fluid with a full flush. Might help a bit.

The Volvo C30/C70 electric steering pump is used in multiple projects and is the most popular or second to most popular retrofit to some non-Volvo cars. It has software support in many standalone ECUs. It truly is a versatile pump.

So software aside, the only problem to solve is hypothetically how to attach it to the original S60 steering rack, the hoses and plugs are different.

As for my hydraulic pump, I think it's just failing. It's buttery smooth when cold but becomes stiffer as the engine warms up. Then there is no change in stiffness with RPM increase.

I’ve run 1999- ps pumps on Volvos without fluid for months , dumping a cap of ps fluid in once a week. This was due to an Exxon Valdez rack of course. On the -1998 style you can just run the drain back to reservoir of course.
