...And just WHAT the crap is this?
THIS THING - whatever the holy heck it is, I Isolated and was the cause of this monstrous / huge disturbing noise from the car.
We left paved road for dirt road maybe 100-150' and it sounded like we were dragging something under the car - bad. We both had been paying attention and so no such 'tree' we ran over. Stopped immediately and looked under car - nothing.
It went away - the noise while reversing and in D a few back and forths trying to get back to main road. And went silent until about an hour later and then horrible sounds.
A third major incident happened weeks later. And mostly otherwise quiet.
ANYWAY... then it degenerated into a pinging jangling noise over bumps, but was quiet. We positively isolated this to front passenger area ... you could clearly hear the jingle jangle with windows down over bumps. I was even able to kick the tire hard and replicate it, then punch the tire with my forearm fist to keep hearing it. Ah... I crawled under the car and kept thumping it outside on the tire... and pulled on everything under that side and wrestled all the suspension parts - all tight except for normal play in the CV joint in and out.
THEN I FOUND THIS - THIS THING. wedged up over the hub - mashed in / tucked in behind the 'hat' of the brake rotor if you can believe this. And the 'handle' of the thing was up orientation. I was able to wriggle it back and forth and up and down about 4 inches. Super weird right? What the hell is this thing doing there?
I compared other side - no such thing. Studied both sides all around suspension - no such thing. Studied microfiche parts diagram, no such thing.
Discovery at midnight in driveweay, I had to drive it in 8 hours for 130 miles to work next morning, then 50 miles back to home.
Finally jacked up and removed wheel and I was able to wrestle this thing out of the car.
This Monstrous noise maker. Silent after that for (2) 500 mile round trips and many local 100 mile trips. the horrible noise is GONE!!!
Super happy.
Btw, what the hell is this thing??

Something loose on the road got snagged and jammed up in there I suspect. Like a small rock getting stuck in the brakes...scraaaape scraaape...

It looks like a mass produced part - all clean edges and smooth curves. Perhaps an automotive part. Likely fell off someone else and bounced into your brakes. But what purpose?
Weird indeed.

So it came loose and came off this car?
A - Why did ALL the bolts come loose?
B - What does a wheel bearing lock brace do? (other than lock in the wheel bearing) Is there a parts diagram?

Oh my gosh. You've got to be kidding me.
Well played sir, good find!!
I had no idea what that was, now you've let me know what it is. Hmm, now I have to look that up - what it does and where it originally was located and what the results are if it's not installed...
Because I also had a massive driver side lower control arm failure not that long after. And excessive steering wheel shake and vibration, and moaning like a wheel bearing noise. Still getting to know this car, haven't driven it more than about 3000 miles total.

It appears this is an aftermarket - maybe to 'fix' a Volvo flaw (?) in a kludgey way.
I read that the bearings can slide out of the hub (!) And this prevents them from moving.
There is a lot of rust down there. I found a few empty bolt in spots, but they did in no way correspond with this bracket.
I assumed they were for a missing (removed / rotten to dust) brake dust cover type of thing. I guess this bracket piggy backs on a few of those bolts with supplied longer bolts.
Aftermarket: this may be why I could not find this part on any standard diagram of the front end.
