2007 Volvo xc90 3.2L petro - oil pan removal

Post by rssherwin1 »

Guys first I wanted to thank you all for the help with my previous car issues amazingly enough I have a new one and it comes with an entertaining story.

Earlier this week my 17yr old son took his mom's 2007 Volvo XC90 3.2L to school. When he backed out of the garage he didn't look and backed into his grandpas SUV knocking the bumper loose on the GM product. Later that day he went to lacrosse practice where he broke his arm in two places. After our trip to the ER I brought him back to his mom's car to drive it home. He proceeded to not look where he was going and jumped a concrete berm 12-18 inches high bottoming out the car on the oil pan. At that point we were done. His mom drove the car home about 1 mile and parked it in the garage. When I pulled up behind her I could see the oil pouring on the ground. Yep he knocked a hole in the oil pan. Since then I have purchased an oil pan and the sealant to install it from the dealer but need some advice. How does this thing come off? I know the starter has to be removed but there is a bracket frame to engine in the way on the passenger side and on the driver side there are some bolts that thread into the oil pan horizontally it looks like. Has anyone ever removed one of these or does anyone have instructions on how to remove it? Good news almost all the oil was still in the engine I got most of it in a drip pan the rest is on the garage floor and highway.

Oh, and for added comedy I did get a rental for the time bieng but it has since had a flat and the wiper blades flew off in the rain.

First, hope your son gets well soon!

Below I screenshot (and most refering articles) the oil pan replacement manual out of vida for your B6324S engine.
Haven't worked on that engine personally, so i dont know if there are any shortcuts or steps that you could skip.
anyways, if you have any more questions, just ask! maybe other people here can help you then!

Thanks, he’s afraid to drive but will have to get past that. As for the arm it’s in a cast we find out next week if he needs plates and screws. He’s more upset that he will miss almost all the lacrosse games that are left his senior year.

The specialty tools listed are they really required to complete this task in your opinion? I’ve changed 2-3 oil pan gaskets on GM and Fords I’ve owned in the past and no special tools were needed(V8 trucks much easier to work on).

  • The tool 999 7270 / 9997270 / 999 7270-5 (numbers written out for search engine optimization) seems to just be a template for aplying the sealant, so not imporant in my opinion.
  • The last tool, 999 5716 / 9997516 / 999 7516-9 is a lifter to lift the engine to remove the engine mounts.
Not sure, if its even necessary to remove all mounts tho. The engine can be liftet from the underside with a car jack (but that interferes if you want to remove the pan)

I just finished the repair I had to buy an engine support beam to raise the engine to get the motor mount out other than that everything went smoothly. Thank you again for your help. I’m waiting 24 hours before adding fluids so the sealant cures completely. Only thing left on her car is the engine noise in the speakers when using auxiliary and it will be as good as new (not sure what it is but it sounds like a ground loop).

Now we just have to hope my son doesn’t need surgery for the broken arm.

Nice. Yeah, there’s plenty of room underneath and just need that height clearance using the upper support beam. If it’s colder by you, wait a little more than 24hrs for the sealant, just to be in the safe side. Double check bolts after a heat cycle or two. Check oil filter to ensure there isn’t any metal from running low on oil or the impact.

IMHO, since the XC90 is one of the safest vehicles produced, it’s a good vehicle for your son to drive. Let’s hope he doesn’t need surgery.

I kept it in a heated garage it’s about 75 degrees f in there I’m probably the only homeowner with a heated garage in my area we don’t usually get cold weather. I plan to do a retorque in 2 days giving it to trips of 10 miles per day. I filled it with oil and drove it 5 miles stop and go brought home and inspected- no leaks found. I checked the old filter no metal found but intend to pull the new one this weekend to verify.

Good news!

No leaks everything looks good. Son does not need surgery for the broken arm.

He is complaining that he is being given the 2007 Volvo XC90 and not the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. I did add the Android Radio with backup cam to the Volvo where the center dash speaker goes for added backup safety and handsfree driving. Not sure why he is complaining it's better than the car I was given as a kid. The reason he's not getting the Jeep is because I don't trust him to take care of it based on what the wife and I are seeing. He will need to show some more responsibility first and prove he will take care of the car he is given then we'll see.

Tell him to price out the Jeep and payments including insurance and provide you a proposal of the benefits of that purchase.
