Could I use a "shortcut" to replace an ABS reluctor ring on a 2007 XC70?

Post by AylmerQc »

The reluctor ring on the driver side is all corroded and I have a brake warning and ABS code that are permanent.
Last year I struggled for a couple of weeks with heat and cans of every type of rust penetration fluid, trying to replace the passenger side ring but couldn't split the drive axle from the hub. I ended up taking the entire unit off the car, along with the cast aluminium knuckle, to a garage where they tried to press out the shaft with a hydraulic press.
The knuckle broke instead so I had to buy all replacement components.
I'm wondering if any one has ever tried or if you think it would work, to just remove the old ring with a chisel, clean the surface where it was and using new ring split in two (carefully sawn with a fine metal blade) then "glue" the two pieces of the ring where the old one used to be using something like loctite, or these new quick setting super glues..?
I will try it, one way or another, once the weather warms up but thought I would ask in ase anyone has ever had a go at something similar...

I've replaced 3 by removing the old, cleaning, heating new one, and using the old one to smack the new one in with a hammer. Had no issues and never removed a driveshaft to do it.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

i wouldn't do that, just do the job, you don't even know if its stuck yet.
an air hammer might be a better choice over a press.
