‘99 S70 Wrong cylinder head?
I bought a non-running S70 at auction. It has the 56 code B5254T engine (verified by engine serial number. But - it has provisions for an intake VVT. (That isn’t there) It’s my understanding the ‘99 T only had VVT on the exhaust. Has someone replaced the head at some point? It’s a California car if that makes a difference.

They use the same casting for both NA and turbo heads, thus why the (unfinished) provision for the intake VVT is there. It is not open/functional.

From what I have worked on the 99-00 P80 cars have a VVT solenoid on the intake only on NA engines and exhaust only on turbos.
Good luck with your new challenge!
Neil.

.
+1. NA is on intake side only. Already stamped / cast except holes are drilled.

Even more complicated
99 NA…no VVT
99 Turbos Exhaust VVT
2000 NA intake VVT
2000 turbos Exhaust VVT
ECUS dOnt swap, which is moot as they are pinned to VIN anyhow.
The two solenoids are unique
Definitely search by engine number as there may be a engine number break on these changes, not a VIN BREAK
On top of this , there is a transition from 7mm to 6mm valve stems as well as hydraulic to mechanical lifters in the head in 1999
Engine number is on sticker on timing belt cover, and also pin punched into the block behind the water pump area

GREAT summary of engine valve management for 1999 and 2000. Can others add the information for 2001+ engines? When were Exhaust and Intake VVT used?abscate wrote: ↑19 Mar 2024, 05:17 Even more complicated

Thanks for all the responses!
The ‘Bastards’ thread is a goldmine of information. TBH I thought the ‘99 S70 would be nearly identical to the 850’s but I’ve learned they are almost completely different. Especially frustrating is the horrible chipped key anti-theft mess. It’s a good thing the new-to-me S70 is just a ‘hobby’ car!
We previously had a 960 and it was probably the best vehicle we have owned, very powerful, extremely comfortable and handled like it was on rails. Unfortunately an errant deer put an end to it.
It’s only natural I would end up with an oddball car, I also have an ‘07 BMW X5 with 3rd row seats and 4 zone climate control which makes it a virtual unicorn. The S70 ‘bastard’ will fit right in the fleet.
