Rear passenger door stuck closed.

Post by rguzz »

96 855 rear door wont open from inside or out and lock appears to be in the closed position. Searched for the fix but found only piecemeal info and I know this has been discussed a few times, don't remember the fix. Remind me, thanks.

Internal latch failure, there seems to only be The Final Solution:

With luck the plastic standoff pedestals will detach themselves from the back of the door card - if they aren't already. Apply patience and the panel is usually salvageable. Can't remember if the 850s had a couple of screws in the bottom, but breaking stuff getting access is inevitable.
Much easier on a back door than one of the fronts, since the seat isn't in the way.

And don't forget to hit the thumb button, helps with the Y/T algorithm. Might get Robert an extra $0.01.

Tailgate or passenger rear door?

Tailgate, Robert DIY did a video on removing the inner panel and unlatching it I recall. I did a quick search but could not find it on YouTube.

There have been a few threads on stuck rear and front doors. Basically it requires removing the inner door panel to allow access to the lock mechanism. It is hard to do without damaging the inner door panel but it can be sone with patience.

Thanks. Looks like a somewhat miserable undertaking, unfortunately. Maybe I should find a replacement salvage door panel before I start. Maybe just the bench has to come out. I think Robert has the definitive steps on removal and repair of the failed mechanism in one of his videos not sure yet how to tackle that.

I wonder if a slim-jim/unlocking tools would work? I think I'd see what Amazon or ebay had before breaking anything.

The door panel should come off okay and Robert's videos do outline the repair needed pretty clearly so time to give it a whirl. The little grommets that disintegrate and hold the rod in place are available through FCP. Looks like re-configuring the rod is also an option. Spring is here, my annual Volvo time of they year to catch up on nuisance repairs so no excuses.

My 2002 V70 XC hatch won't lock or unlock sometimes. I was thinking of adding a pull lever if there are provisions in the lock for hooking something. However, it might be easier to unlock with an opening?

Looks like you can cut an opening and cover it with something later? If there is room on the inside you can get a shallow low voltage old works box. There are various cover colors to choices from to match the interior.
