2009 v50

Post by Friedy »

Hello I passed on to my young son our v50 and on a snowy night with all his friends with him he drove over a speed bump too fast. He came home and said dad my car sounds funny. Long story short he cracked the oil pan and drove it dry of oil. Amazingly he made it home, but when I check to see if the engine would turn over I found it was seized. What could I expect to pay for parts if an attempt is made to rebuild the engine.

If the engine is seized I would look for another engine. The cost of rebuilding won't be cheap unless you can do the strip down and rebuild yourself. The machining work could be extensive.

I would look for a similar engine from an 08- car. There were changes in the engines for the facelift in 2008. I have yet to find what they were, but a friend recently bought a car with a replacement engine from an 08 C30 T5 and it is fitted into his 06 V50 T5 AWD. I know from what he was told by the previous owner the repair shop had a lot of challenges doing the swap.

An engine in our area is typically in the $1200-2000 CDN (about $900-1500 US) depending on mileage.

Seized as it won't crank or you've taken a large bar to the crank pully bolt to see you can spin the motor?

No, I haven’t tried using a bar to turn the crank over

I have rebuilt engines before but never a seized engine. I will try to rotate the crank tomorrow. I would imagine that the head is scrap unless there are bearing inserts for the cams. Never seen that before. Machine the crank hone the cylinders, new pistons, oil pump. What is the best source for parts?

It wouldn’t hurt anything to open the thing up and see how bad it really is.

If the motor can be manually rotated / break free, change the oil and check compression. Could be seized just enough for the starter but once freed may still be okay to drive for a bit till you have time to work on it.
