My 05 S60 has 160k and has hard down shifting from 3rd to 2nd gear when warm. All the Volvo geeks I talked to told me that most likely the valve body needs repair or replacement - a software update won't help.
Due to the value of the car I am opting for a rebuilt valve body, not a new one. I repair shop nearby has done this king of job multiple times, and agreed for me to provide the part. All my searches point at Part Number 31259459 and I am comparing the images with those from darcarsvolvocars.com. There are minor differences, most of the rebuilt ones have a T10 - 9168 number on them while the new one shows T15 - 9168 (attached).
Can I assume that this is likely to fit?

I don't know the cost of the rebuilt valve body from your local shop but for a quality rebuild it's not cheap and it might be worth considering a new valve body sold through GM. These are genuine Aisin (OEM) valve bodies and cost less than $600. A couple of simple changes make them compatible with Volvo's. If your shop has a lot of experience with these valve body and it's a quality rebuild then go with them but an all new valve body is also a good option to consider. Another option you might consider is rebuilding your existing valve body with a Sonnax or Transgo kit. I used the Transgo kit to address a shift flare and hard 3-2 shift and slamming from Park to Drive or Reverse about 5 years ago with good success. Flush and fills will only help so much until you have to overhaul the linear solenoids (the 3 larger ones). The Transgo kit has the parts to rebuild these solenoids. It took about a weekends worth of time and the transmission still shifts like new with 320000 kms on it. I'd be surprised if your valve body is worn out at 160000 miles. I think I paid about $120.00

They're not doing much with the valve body if they only charge $120 for the rebuild. It's a fair amount of work to replace the valve body and you don't want to do the work all over again so I'd be a little skeptical using such a low cost rebuild. I would at least ask them what they do to rebuild the valve body and linear solenoids. At minimum the valve body should be taken apart, inspected for wear/damage and cleaned and the same goes for the linear solenoids, can't imagine any shop being able to do this amount of work for $120.

As far as I see, those $120 rebuilt ones are all coming from China, thus the low price. There are multiple sellers on Ebay. Not a miracle, because the AW55/50 has been in so many GM, Nissan etc.
Currently checking if there are any "real U.S." sellers that don't just resell the China ones - but I doubt it.
