Defacing Rotors

Post by Metallo »

Hi folks,

I need an opinion on the following:

Last week I had my vehicle inspection, which is the only time I take my car to the local Volvo dealer.
The car did not pass the inspection because they found that my rear rotors are defacing not allowing full contact with the brake pads.

I bought two new rotors and installed them today.

Below you see the 'defacing' genuine Volvo rotors:

Do they look defacing to you?
Maybe I have a different interpretation of 'defacing', which is why I am asking.

Thank you!

What is defacing? Never heard the term being used in terms of a rotor condition.

If they mean the faces of the rotor are not a complete shiny flat surface, then it is hard to see from the images. However today I swapped out a pair of front rotors on a V50 and the rear side of the rotors had only perhaps 70% of the rotor face contacting the pads. They were done.

The cause is pads that were worn out and slider pins that were sticking. Basically long overdue a service.

If your rotors have faces that are full of small grooves, then maybe that is what they meant. Looking at higher magnification, the outer faces of the the rotors are not evenly wearing. If you look at how much of the outer surface on the upper one is rusted from the outer edge versus the other one it is not fully being swept by the pads. They also have grooves. They are worn, but not the worst I have seen.

I see what they mean. Though that is not a normal term.

The rotor “face” has worn in beyond the minimum thickness spec. Thus “de-faced” (NO, I would not use that term nor is it common - some asshat beaurocrat made that up). That is why we don’t live in the UK or Canada (meme below). But back on point - based on the visible edge on the rotor, it looks quite worn in. In fact, it looks horrible.

Bluntly: I’d never run a rotor that worn-in on a car of mine or any member of my family. It’s beyond spec and the face too worn-in (e.g., “de-faced”).

Since you can now be arrested for idle Tweets in the UK, or bad thoughts in Canada, worth pointing out:

Yup, language is a funny thing. We supposedly all speak English but some better than others. Funny thing. Apparently the closest that academics believe is spoken to the Queens' (now Kings') English is spoken in the North of Scotland in Inverness.

Oh, dear, did we get out of bed on the wrong side today?
