So, one of the many 'potential' issues is a throttle body error. I am going around in circles and all the issues could be one or 5 at least different issues or 1 causing the others. Solutions for any are not cheap!!
For the throttle body there seems to be 2 part numbers:
1) Volvo part number : 30711553 (Bosch # 0 280 750 103)
2) Volvo part number : 30711554 (Bosch # 0 280 750 131)
For 1), if I put that number into Volvo websites they say they can't find the part number. The only reference I can find for it is on aftermarket websites and used parts sites. They seem to say it fits all turbo P2 cars, but do not list the XC70. They do list a V70 AWD though?? My buddy has one of these although he can't recall what it was from.
For 2), that is the only part number that comes up on the Volvo sites and is listed for this car? I am assuming it is the one related to the Bosch number above ending in 131 as the car currently has a Bosch (not OE Volvo) fitted with that part number.
The added confusion, a couple of sites (like Amazon) selling aftermarket units list both part numbers as being compatible with the units they are selling??
If it were not for the Bosch number difference, I might of thought that it was one of those parts where the actual part has one part number, but the complete part with software or as part of a kit has a different part number.
Nothing is easy! Oh, and I have a possibility of a low mileage aftermarket one from a totaled 05 V70 Volvo. Problem is I have no way of identifying a cross reference for it.
Any help appreciated!
Neil.

I have done a lot more searching. I eventually found a parts site in the UK selling Bosch TB's and they stated that the 103 part number was replaced by the 131 number. Got to love Volvo parts systems! I've had a friend in the local dealer running around in circles all afternoon like me trying to get this figures out. He says he cannot find the 30711553 part number anywhere, yet I can see it on a part. He was at least confirm the part is used on many P2 derived vehicles including XC90 (2.5l) and 2.9 (so up to around 2006).
So I believe it is going to be a case of it will work or not! I know I will have to do an adaption on the TB in any case.
This is fun??

Warning - Way to much detail that may interest only a few people:
One of the sticky details of engineering design process is tracking of part updates. Sooner or later most part designs get a revision or replacement. Revisions are generally treated as a rolling change to the original part number and can freely be used to replace the earlier made original part.
Sometimes a replacement part is found in the vast engineering catalog of parts and a substitution is made for the original part. This may be the case you have found where a different part number replaced the original part number. Within the engineering database the old part number will have a note saying the new part supersedes the original part. But these notes are not generally available to us lowly parts buyers.
Other times a faulty design requires replacement of several parts together to fix a problem. In this case, a specific build serial number will be the transition point where these parts are all changed at once. Sometimes you will see this noted in the part information as one part number up to xxxxx serial number and another part number for serial number xxxxx+1.

This is all new to me. I am used to the P80 ETM's and as long as it was the same engine (NA/LPT/HPT) then if you connect it and cycle the ignition and it whirrs, it will work ok, But these seem a little different. They still seem to have a software (according to Volvo). I guess I will find out in a day or so. I got an original one from my mechanic buddy, but the near new (<5000km) Vemo branded one came from a V70 2.5T which is basically the same engine. There is a delay on that one getting collected, so if I don't get it in the next 2 days I will be up to tackle that TB again and use the one my buddy offered and even cleaned for me!!
Thanks for keeping me sorted on this as it is new to me working on engine stuff on P2's.
Neil.

hey there, sounds like a real headache with those part numbers! i've had similar issues with my volvo before. have you tried contacting a volvo specialist directly? they might have some insider knowledge on this stuff.

according to the list linked below your 02 xc70 is not matched to the ecm vin.scot850 wrote: ↑05 Sep 2024, 14:58 This is all new to me. Thanks. This car is on the cusp of the change. It does not have the P80 style Magneti Marelli ETM. It has the later P2 throttle body

There is reference to there being software loaded, but it is not clear what or why. This will be a voyage of discovery just like the ETM when everyone said the ETM had to be programmed to your specific car, then eventually you just needed of from the same engine type (NA/LPT/HPT) and it works. I have spent a lot of time looking at this and the TB part number covers a lot of cars, all turbos. Looks like NA may be different. Nothing ventured and all that!
Appreciate the warning!

I decided as I am stuck until I get parts, I would open up the 2 throttle bodies I have (the original and the loaner to try out) and have a look.
I have heard of 2 issues with these throttle bodies:
1) - There are 2 plastic toothed wheel in these units. One in not a full wheel and only has maybe 50% of the circumference with teeth. Apparently they can strip teeth. The one that was in the car is a Bosch unit and not the original I believe as it has no Volvo part number on it. The teeth were perfect in it and just needed some light cleaning. The loaner unit was a fair bit dirtier but not bad and cleaned up. The center wheel has 2 sets of teeth. A larger diameter on the top, and a smaller diameter under with much fewer teeth the connect to the partially toothed wheel. Those teeth on the smaller lower section shoed signs of wear. But in neither code were there any broken teeth.
2) The motors can get oil into them and that will cause then to fail. The original had virtually no dirt in it. however the bearings looked very dry, so I added a small drop of light oil to both bearings before re-assembly. The other motor was similarly clean. So no obvious issues there either.
Overall, both units seemed really tidy and clean inside the motor and gear area.
I am considering just re-installing the original and see what happens now the unit has been fully cleaned.
