That nice quiet rear hub I harvested 6 years ago from a 98 is toast. Seems like FCP's Meyle is the best option price wise and the known brand.
Any comments, suggestions?
Need 96 850 base rear wheel hub: Meyle?

Have you tried Rock Auto? They list an SKF for the rear. I just bought front SKF, so check if they include new mounting bolts as I was told by SKF they did, but they didn't. The bolts should be replaced as they are stretch bolts.

Thanks for that pointer. Rock Auto, yeah, I've bought parts there awhile ago and been satisfied. So happened they had a GMB hub on closeout for $32.00 so after checking a few reviews and recalling that I've purchased that brand before that's the one I bought.

GMB is one of the premier OE suppliers of CVs, bearing assemblies, etc. It’s oe quality or better (depending upon who OE is). I need to replace a Lexus waterpump and I was THRILLED to get a GMB one vs. Aisin (OE) one, as the OE ones are well-known to be garbage. So you will be A-ok, use it without worry at all.

SKF only for the bearings if you don't want to have to do them again in 2 years. Though for 32 bucks, probably worth a shot if you're on a budget.
What are you talking about? Aisin water pumps are the OE for Volvo, and even have the Volvo casting ground off. They are far from garbage - some of the best ones you can get, and that's been well provenOro wrote: ↑11 Sep 2024, 23:43 GMB is one of the premier OE suppliers of CVs, bearing assemblies, etc. It’s oe quality or better (depending upon who OE is). I read somewhere that GMB uses Timken roller bearings, though that's not indicated on the printed box.
If so and the race is carefully machined the hub should last a good long while. The seals look robust.
There was another closeout for US 22.00, so I also got that one for a spare. It shipped in a white box with the Rock Auto stock number partially covering the original distributor's name: CarQuest. Its machining looks good on the visible surfaces. No way to know what bearings they used.

I can only presume you have limited knowledge of Aisin applications.
In Toyota and Lexus applications, Aisin has used bad bearings that has resulted in fleet-wide recalls and in other cases, seized and trashed engines. But rant on from your narrow horse…
I own a 2009 GS350 awd, first recall for bad Aisin water pump was in 2013.
Aisin engineers well, quality controls poorly. MANY trashed vehicle from bearing failures in A750 transmission, U141 transmissions, water pumps in early 2GR V6s, etc. But by all means, attack the messenger instead of learning…

That’s very likely - GMB is tier one OE manufacturer. use it w/o worry.JimBee wrote: ↑14 Sep 2024, 20:06 I read somewhere that GMB uses Timken roller bearings, though that's not indicated on the printed box.

I’m likely going to pro-actively do the water pump again in my GS a third time, as the dealer used an Aisin last time. I’ll use a GMB this time so it will never have to be done again.
