Alternator rotation - 1999 V70 GLT

Post by scot850 »

My buddy has this car with a bad AC clutch. He asked me a question about could he us a shortened serp belt and bypass the compressor until his AC compressor an dryer arrive. I am no electrical expert, but a quick google says that alternators can be run in reverse. Because when you mis the AC compressor out the shortened belt rotates the alternator pulley wheel in the reverse direction.

One issue I know about is that some alternators have directional cooling fan blades. I am sure that on a Volvo alternator I have seen a directional arrow in either the casing or the pulley wheel. Anyone know if we can try running this one in reverse safely as this is his daily?

Thanks,

Neil.

I recently replaced two alternators and one pulley on a 2000 Nissan Maxima and 2003 Honda Odyssey. Didn't have time for the Odyssey's pulley as it's located such and put together as if it's like a separate part not affecting the rest of the system when removing and installing. From kind of visualizing both systems I don't believe the belt will be running backwards. Perhaps post the belt diagram for all to have a look.
.
Blessings,

BKM

There is a thread on this

The short belt on the 1999 reverses the alternator spin, and because it has a clutch, it will no longer generate electricity

I thought there was an issue, but did not recall this issue. I'd forgotten they had a clutch on the Volvo alternators.

I did some 'research' in the 'stash'. Naturally I have 2 alternators, neither for this application. I have one for a -98 P80 which has arrows for rotation molded in the casting. These arrows point CW (clock-wise).

The P2 version I have also has arrows on it and they point CCW. I couldn't quite see what the 'R' has on it's alternator, but it rotates in the same direction as the P2.

Looking at both alternators the do have shaped cooling fins internal to the body of the alternator. One the 2 alternators those point in opposite directions. So even without a clutch they would run hotter.

Vida is pretty much useless on the subject. It shows the options for with and without, but both have the same alternator and both show the same belt routing with and A/C compressor??

This it the thread:

Abscate included the belt diagram. If you check it you should figure out if you remove the A/C compressor the alternator would have to have the serp belt turning it in the opposite direction. With the clutch, then it won't work as per Abscates notes.
