2006 S60 New Corteco Passenger side slight leak question ..

Post by cn90 »

Ok,

I have done this a few times before (2004 V70, 2007 S60)...basically routine maintenance at > 100K miles...near Axle GKN boots and "while there" replaced both axle seals using Corteco. Zero issues on the 2004 V70 and 2007 S60.

I wrote the DIY in this forum.

The 2006 S60 has only 106K miles. I just did the same job of GKN boots and axle seals (Corteco from FCP)...
- L side: zero leak after the job.
- R side: slight leak, just a drop in driveway but no big leak. As you know, installing the seal can be tough, and I know I installed it just 1 mm deeper than factory.

I hate doing this seal job again, thus the question:

- Does new seal need time to settle in?
- Has anyone had this problem before and the leak stops after a while?

Thanks!

Does anyone know any trick to pull the seal out a tiny bit such as 1-2 mm (in situ) without damaging the new seal?

I am making an installation seal tool (using wood) for future use, so it is in the correct depth.

Not really. Hard to get the seal part way out as the only way is to get under the lip and try to work it out. I have a Lisle seal puller for using when the shaft is still in place. It may be worth a try but unfortunately with the LHS axle you cant get in due to the inner CV axle can being too close to the trans. This proximity makes it hard to get in without pulling the axle, at which point you might as well remove it and try another seal. The seal is likely leaking as it got nicked slightly on install (been there!) or there is a slight wear groove on the axle contact point.

Sorry,

Neil.

Per Volvo dealer, when installing RH axle seal, their techs use...9995769 and 9995770 tools.

Not sure what 9995769 is (it might be a faked axle shaft so the drift can slide into it, just a guess), but 9995770 is definitely the seal drift tool.

I will make my own tool and report back later...

If you are reusing the axle, look on the shaft where the seal contacts to see if it has a wear groove and where it sits relative to the new seal.

I have used regular flat plate seal installers for years without issues. I seat the seals flat with the housing.

First time I used a Volvo tool was for cam seals as they are not tolerant to change (bit like myself!!). Then there were the 3 install tools for the XC60 trans swap for the rear main, and trans/angle gear seals. $500 for those. Thankfully the car owner was happy to pay for those.

@ Neil: It took me a while to understand this: P2 axle seals don't seal the axle shaft, they seal a cup that is part of the transmission. So there is no sealing line/groove on a P2 axle shaft. This is why the spline ends come out bone dry (no ATF on the end).

Removing/installing P2 axles does not disturb the axle seal at all, unlike on a P80 car. But you may want to replace the P2 axle seals while you're in there.

Dumb question, but is this the same with an 06 with a 6 speed manual transmission? My 06 S60 T5 M has a slight leak on the passenger side. Does the axel have anything to do with sealing oil on a manual transmission?

Thanks for the education Erik! I knew the P3 had that type of hollow bucket that does not go through to the fluid. It has just a o-ring to keep dirt out and then a seal on the outside of the bucket. Heck, you learn every day! My 2000R with the 5 speed auto does not have that and I thought the early P2's were the same. Hm. Looking at a parts drawing it shows a seal for the 02 P2, (now I am wary that the new Volvo parts drawings are now often wrong), but this shows there is a seal which is listed for P1, P2 and P80's for the LHS of the trans that is the same seal?

I guess it is like the RHS axle with the collar on an AWD car.

In a somewhat related topic, has anyone here had a garter spring coming off during installation?

Of course, you won't know until the leaky seal is removed for inspection.

Please see this interesting video. I thought I know about seal until I watched this video!

During installation the answer is yes, I have had that. It was dumb installer error. I did not get the seal straight on when pounding it in.

That was only once though. It shouldn't happen if using the correct tools and only hitting on the outer ring.
