06 XC-70 suspension - get a smoother ride

My wife's 06 XC70 has pretty much totally gone shocks. Clanking, clunking, all the rest.
What it does have is a much smoother ride than my '01 with working shocks. I know most of the world is saying "what," but if you drive on US roads you know.

Everywhere I look it seems like they all spec the same Sachs struts. Anyone know if there is a pretty much drop-in to give a smoother, more "cadillac-y" ride, or is this just not a thing that is done? I know I wouldn't be able to get, say, the premade bolt-on struts with a softer shock, which complicates things, but might be worth it.
