Replacing the starter motor assembly

Post by greasefingerss »

Starter motor replacement

Replacing the starter on an 850 is a slight PITA.
Remove the vacuum lines and some of the electrical connectors under the top of the fan shroud. There is the main relay, erg solenoid, and fan controller that need to be out of the way to get the fan out.
The fan and shroud gets removed as a unit (one piece) with two bolts at the top. The bottom has no bolts just two ears that slip into the bottom of the radiator.
Then I removed the plastic fresh air intake hose to the air box, the throttle body air intake hose and the lower Idle air control valve rubber hose and finally the battery. This makes more room for your hands to fit down in there. You might be able to leave some of these things in place, but I like space to work in. Starting the starter bolts with no room is a recipe for cross-threading.

Standing in front of the engine, there are two main bolts that need to be removed from the driver’s side of the starter. There will be an electrical harness in the way of one bolt. Remove the harness hold-down clamp so that the starter bolt has room to unscrew.

Once the two main starter bolts are removed I disconnected the main power cables to the starter solenoid and a little green wire. One more bolt and it’s free. The rear of the starter is attached to the engine with bracket. It is hard to see. I removed this bolt from underneath the vehicle. Now the starter can be removed upwards from the engine bay and out towards the battery. You have to unbolt and save the bracket from the starter as my new starter did not have this support bracket.

I purchased my Bosch starter from Napa. The support bracket threads on it were larger diameter than the original one, so I had to go to HomeDepot to purchase two small metric nuts.

Uhh--was most of this howto truncated? It looks like it stops in mid-sentence and doesn't cover much of the procedure...

It looks like quite a bit, it must have happened when the site got converted. It happened to a bunch of my posts that I wrote in MS Word prior to posting them to the site. I'll PM the original poster to see if they still happen to have the writeup on their computer. Thanks for pointing out the problem.
