Carrier bearing replacement?

Post by dikidera »

On FWD cars, the passenger driveshaft has a bearing. I think mine has been worn, for a while I am hearing a grinding or binding sound that is speed dependent and happens only in a particular position of the tyre roation. It must be it.

The question is, is it replaceable and how specifically?

It’s more likely a front wheel bearing or hub then the carrier bearing of the noise changes on steering wheel position.

The best speed to check is about 50 kph, gently swerve back and forth on an open road to test

Cartier bearing constant noise

Fwb, noise will change. Louder on left swerve is bad right bearing, louder on right swerve is bad left bearing

I mean you may have a point. When I rebuilt my rack, I did not get an alignment yet, due to many other reasons and lack of time. But the feeling is felt closer to my feet, but to the right. I was planning to replace the wheel bearing but I think the driveshaft bearing also needs it.

Still how is this driveshaft bearing removed.

Would just replace the driveshaft instead of mucking about removing and installing that bearing. Numerous threads on here about dimensions of the bearing and installation in recent months.

Take the shaft out and give that bearing a spin by hand. You will feel if it's dry. The replacement is easy, if you have a standing press.

Although the bearing is not specifically listed for cars, it is I believe still listed for 850's. I have confirmed the same bearing is used for all P80's and also P2 cars. I had a thread on the subject in the last few months if I recall correctly.

Strange drawing but item #6 on the drawing attached. vtl has said how to remove it if you have a press. Other options is to break the outer bearing with a sharp chisel and hammer, then lightly cut through part of the inner part of the bearing race and again break with a hammer and chisel. I re-installed mine using a piece of metal tubing.

AS-457519-2RS is what I have listed in my parts quote to CanadianBearings as the size. $250cad is crazy.

Makes the $242 + Tax from Volvo of Toronto for an OE part seem cheap! Well not really............

Is the equivalent for $40 for me, sounds reasonable.

A common size for a lot of applications in Europe: https://febest.de/en/details/axle_shaft ... 457519_2rs
