Am I cooked? '95 850

Post by chrus »

Hi,

Due to my fathers engine blowing up and him needing to drive my toyota, I am stuck daily driving a 200k miles '95 850 non-turbo that I think is probably not ready to drive daily.

Today i was investigating the car shaking rough at idle and i was inspecting the throttle body and intake hoses, i noticed a lot of oil buildup inside the air intake hose. I am guessing this car needs a PCV system cleaning or replacement. But anyways I cleaned up everything and put the intake hoses and flame trap back together, and I am not sure if i just didnt notice it before but there is a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust, as well as a tiny amount of smoke coming from somewhere in the engine bay, please see the youtube link below.

I swear when I drove this car yesterday it did not smoke this much. The engine is cold in that video FYI, i have not let it warm up since i noticed the smoke. It smells like exhaust fumes or burnt oil, I dont know what coolant smoke would smell like but I do not think it is that because the coolant levels are stable. I am going to change the oil tomorrow and see if theres anything mixed in there. And as a general question does anything sound off with the engine other than that belt noise? I was planning to do timing belt/serpentine/bearing/pulleys soon.

I guess my main question is, can a bad evap/PCV system cause this excessive smoke? Or do I have a failing head gasket? Worn rings?

We've had to shuffle cars around quickly and i was not expecting to drive this car so soon. Any help or advice is appreciated, i would really like to preserve this car if it is not too far gone. It is my first manual.

Thanks All

That is gross! Take the flame trap (that formally white disk with a bunch of small holes) carefully out the hose end and toss it. That will allow the engine PCV system to breath better.

With that out to the glove test on the oil filler. Remove the cap and use strong elastic bands over a latex glove to fix the glove over the oil filler. Start the engine and see if the glove inflates. If it just slightly rises or just sits there at idle, try giving the engine some gas and see what the glove does. If it inflates or partially inflates your PCV system is needing cleaned. If the glove stays flat or gets sucked in you are good.

Takes a bit of effort, but if you have any repair skills, remove the air-intake pipe from the MAF to the turbo and have a look at the PTC 'valve' on the intake pipe and see if it is clear. If not, use carb cleaner and a drill bit by hand to remove the blockage. Then refit making sure the turbo end of the pipe gats back onto the turbo correctly. Be careful as at this age that pipe can get crusty at the turbo end.

Check the throttle body is clean, and the plugs, distributer cap and rotor are clean and good condition. No cracks and the contact faces are clean and shiny.

Neil.
