Those of you with mechanical throttles... 9189149

Post by 454cid »

I'm not sure of this applies to the turbo cars, or just the NA. The plastic cover that goes over the bracket and throttle pulley assembly, do you use it, or have it removed? I removed mine, maybe for cleaning the engine bay, and never re-installed it. I still have it, and am tempted to re-install it, but can never come up with a good reason why, and it's always seemed extraneous to me.

I bought a brand new one because mine was missing when I got the car.
Does it make any meaningful difference ? Nope. Just looks a bit less messy

454 - it's either for looks or to keep fingers from getting pinched in there, I've never figured out. Mine has been off for some time, as I was in there working on things. It might have been an aesthetic thing to make it look a little "slicker" instead of exposed cables and pully.

Yeah, I figure it's a precursor to the modern engine cover.... I keep removing and installing the cover on my Cadillac.

On the 850, I've thought about removing that bracket, and refinishing it, in some manner. The car needs other things that I'm already not doing, so that little project won't happen any time soon.

I took it off my 850 T one day also and never put it back. Same with the turbo heat shield. And the engine cover.

'98 V70, it's sitting in a box. Unless one is extremely stupid, it likely has no real purpose. =)
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

I thought it was a T25 threaded bolt with washer for the screw.

Point made above, " unless you are incredibly stupid...." , enough said. I'd suggest the cover gives some protection to the throttle mechanism. Is it essential no.

Just like manufacturers have had to take measures to avoid the danger of a stuck open throttle due to throttle body icing, this is likely another safety measure.
The throttle spring has a lot of return force on it (to ensure it will close once released) and would likely be able to close itself regardless but it is possible if something with the right mass were to be forcefully pulled into the space between the front of the throttle pulley and whatever is in front of it by the strong spring tension of the throttle, it could get wedged and prevent the throttle from closing.
I know on my car I have had to reattach the hood insulation/lining and it is possible, though unlikely, that some of the liner could contact and then get pulled down into that gap as I mentioned before or could simply get tangled in the pulley and cable.
I'd rather just keep it in place than be concerned with those potentially dangerous issues.
YMMV especially if you keep a super clean and organized engine bay.

I think mine did have a separate washer which made me think it might not be original. I keep forgetting to look for it, when I go out to the garage.
