The excellent Charm.li manual set includes this diagram on the subject of replacing brake pads in the 2010 v50 manual.
This clearly means "don't put any grease on the slide pins, but do put grease where the brake pad tabs slide in their caliper grooves.
I have always greased all slide pins on each and every disc brake caliper. Have I been wrong all these years?

1982 240DL: Drove it 32 years and 1.5 million miles (sold, even still had mint leather!)
2001 v70 2.4T: The most expensive $1500 car I ever bought ("Volvo Turbo" - what an oxymoron!) (sold)
2004 v70: Far less fatally-flawed v70 - It served well (sold)
2010 v50: Smaller, slightly sportier wagon. Its got a spoiler, so I upgraded with sway bars!

This is a topic of discussion. Some say do use it and others no. I have always used brake grease (not anti-seize) on the sliders. Never had any issue with it.

Let's focus on your location. In NYC you will likely go through pads x10 faster than me in upstate NY. I love this style of the caliper since they rarely seeze. I always put a little of silicone brake grease to the sliders after polishing them.
I would also try to replace pads at 50% life so the caliper pistons not pushed too far out allowing for salty brine to get in. (If someone is in Arizona they sure will call me crazy)

The logic for no grease is most people will gob it on so the air trapped inside won't allow the piston to slide further in or perhaps outward if the air were to pass somehow. This would cause the pad to not move freely. I would say film it rather than leaving it dry. They are counting on 100% sealing of the boots from any moisture to prevent rust which requires replacing them with each brake job.

"The logic for no grease is most people will gob it on so the air trapped inside won't allow the piston to slide further in or perhaps outward if the air were to pass somehow. This style is different and pin goes through a rubber grommet which will squeeze away extra lubrication. Maybe idea here that lubrication can cause deterioration of the rubber component? However for NYS it does not matter. I much better will buy new slidder pin kit from Dorman or Volvo(if available) than will spend 2 hours trying to resurrect rusted and corroded pins(my promise to myself after last brake job on xc60)
