WHEN COLD FEELS LIKE STARVING FOR GAS - 1980 VOLVO GT 242

Post by Snake710 »

HELLO and THANK YOU: Oil was mixing with the water in my car's reserve tank. My mechanic checked the head gasket, found a small crack, and replaced it. My mechanic sent the head to a machine shop to make sure there was nothing wrong with it, and it was fine. I got my car back, and when I started it up this morning it was idling rough and wanted to stall. After I put the car in gear and took off, the car felt like it was starving for gas in all gears. When the car warmed up it started running fine. What could be the problem? Thank you, DEE

I LOVE MY VOLVO!

I have just replaced my fuel filter and pump,I was experiencing some rough running.I would start the car and it would die on me.Eventually it just would not start.I suspected fuel starvation. My first approach was to put about 10 bucks of gas in , just in case the fuel gauge was not reading correctly. No result.
On the side of fuel rail there is a pressure relief valve, trying to relieve the pressure I found that there was no fuel being delivered.
This was my experienece, perhaps this will shed some light on your problem.
I have also read that a dirty fuel filter can give you problems.
Hope this helps

Since this began after the head was off it's most likely a vacuum line not connected. Your symptom may also be caused by a bad control pressure regulator. It's typical for these K jet cars with high mileage to run lean for a short time during warm up. If your problem continues after the first 10 minutes you have a real problem, I'd search for a vacuum leak.
