Fan stays on Volvo V70 01 2.4 20V

Post by mdc218 »

I just purchased a volvo V70 2001 model 2.4 24V about 3 weeks ago . My wife just noticed that the fan stayed on after she turned the motor off ( I think it was the cooling fan) . The Car has done approx 74,000km . I was just wondering if this is normal ? The Car is an Australian Model...

How long did it stay on?

If the engine was very hot it would stay on for a short time to cool it.

Thanks for the speedy reply Bill ...

I'd say it stayed on for about 2 minutes after the motor stopped ..

I agree with MIJ. I have heard one go on for about 5 minutes but that had been thrashed at very high speed for about an hour.

Something that does not get much publicity is:
WARNING! The cooling fan may start or continue to operate (for up to 6 minutes) after the engine has been switched off.
This is in small print in the '96 850 owner's manual.

The keys do not need to be in the ignition for this to happen. I always warn people who pop the bonnet after stopping to keep their fingers away from the fan.
