Motorway/Highway Gas/Petrol Mileage

Post by McBrain »

Hi all,

I've noticed MPG to be a topic of some discussion in various posts, so thought I would start a post dedicated to it. I guess the main reason is to find out what the best mpg people have got on the motorway is.

I recently did a 340 mile trip in the UK and returned a healthy (but not believed) 32.1mpg according to the cars computer. Upon closer Petrol/Gas station receipt inspection I apologised to the computer having confirmed it at 31.8mpg - very pleased both with the accuracy of the trip computer and the overall mpg.

So how does this compare to other peoples experiences? I can't say I've seen anyone else posting mpg like these, some seem quite a lot lower, maybe people can post thir best 'long run' mpg? Maybe we could work out some sort of average across the board?

The above figure for a long run/motorway miles is doing approx 70mph, mostly using cruise control.

Whilst I'm principally intrigued by long distance mpg, with a reasonably light foot, I get around 19mpg around town. It'd also be interesting to see what people are getting in the big smoke.

FYI my car is a '96 850 T5 with 154,500 on the clock.

Let mpg battle commence!!!

I just did a highway trip this past week and calculated 34mpg over 270km, and that's the Imperial gallon. My city mileage has been roughly 24mpg over the last few months when I took the time to calculate. Mine's the NA 850 GLT, with 345,000km on it.

It's been a little while since I have checked mine. But about 3 months ago I checked it twice. I drove about 75% highway and both times it was around 27MPG. These are American gallons. So that is a quart less per gallon, I think 8)
No complaints from me as my last ride was a Ford F150 and did well to get 15MPG on the highway
Now I have another truck that will probably suck down a lot more fuel, but I won't mind as much. It is a 1974 Ford F100. It is fun to drive.

I haven't had long trips on an 'Autobahn' ;) yet, but with what I drove it was about 8.8L/100km (26.7mpg). I normally drive around 130-150km/h (80-90mph), so I think that's not bad.

Overall with much city driving is ~9.5L/100km (24,7mpg).

Btw, you can klick on the image in my sig and check out my consumption statistics.

When I drove the 96 850 NA, I got about 23-25 around town. Now that my daughter has it, the car is getting about 22 in town.

Her typical highway mileage is 28 - 31. I have had high of 38 on one trip where all conditions were "perfect" (the return trip was 35 if I remember correctly).

I always use the 87 Octane (US).

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).

1997 850 wagon 131K (car is for sale)

Well here we go with the great gas mileage discussion.

On a road trip in Northern CA I get about 30 mpg on cruise control and not exceeding 70 mph. This would be at about 80 degrees, 87 octane gas, new tires and 36 psi tire pressure. No car load.

Between local towns about 25 mpg. This is not city driving. Few people ride as light on a car as I do.

By the way the ABS fail light would usually come on. Heat problem in the control module. I fixed it per Made in Japan.

Let the bullshit begin.

I get 30 mpg (actual, not computer calculated) when highway driving. Drops to 25-26 when I do mostly "city" driving. I live in Maine, we don't have real cities.

Oh thats a 96 850 NA Wagon with 142,000 miles.

Never done any better than 26.5 mpg.

What grade fuel are you guys using?

I always use regular gas. If I see my mileage drop below 25 (except in the winter) I start hunting for problems like tire pressure, uneven wear that would indicate alignment issues, dragging brakes, etc.
