Over the past three weeks a new problem has developed with my 2003 XC70. It may be related to the summer heat, maybe not.
After driving sometimes the car won't start. It cranks fine, but it will not fire. Sometimes it sounds like it is about to fire, but won't. Generally if the car sits over night it will start fine in the morning.
One time we had the car towed to the closest mechanic. It wasn't a Volvo dealership so they didn't have the diagnostic equipment. They said the engine wasn't getting fuel. They hit the tank/fuel pump with a mallet of some kind and it started right up.
Another time it was the morning and the car hadn't been started since the day before. I jumped on the back bumper, shaking the car, and it started right up.
Last night it didn't start and I jumped on the back bumper, shaking the car, and it didn't fix the problem. In the morning it started right up.
We have taken the car to a Volvo dealership and they said the fuel pump is working fine. They couldn't replicate the problem after running the car and stopping it a few times.
The car has never quit while driving. Once running it is fine. This is an issue when starting.
I am at a total loss and would appreciate any help. Thanks!
Trouble Starting, 2003 XC70
I have a 2003 Volvo xc70 2.5T with 110K on it. Yesterday the car would not start. I knew I needed a battery so I spent a few hours looking for one while the car sat without a battery installed. I installed the battery approx. 4 hrs. later and turned the ignition switch all the way to position 3 and I could hear a click from the starter/solenoid. As a result, I check the starter relay and this checked out fine. When I provided power from my power probe 3 to the relay terminal, the leg from the relay to the positive side of starter the engine clicked and then engaged the starter to a point the engine slowly turned over. Sounded like a lazy starter. I checked voltage at the positive side of the battery and got my 12.6 volts. Interesting fact, when I provided the power via the relay terminal and had my wife turn the key to position 3 simulating starting the car, it started absent any problems. I believe it may be a corroded connection at the Starter/solenoid or both need to be replaced. Also I have no messages regarding the immobilizer. I really don’t believe it is the ignition switch. Is there anything I am missing here? If anyone has some advice it would be greatly appreciate it. Thanks…Additionally, if anyone has any advice regarding removal/installation of the starter/solenoid or any photographs that would be helpful that would also be appreciated. I have Vida and it provides generic pictures and instructions, but what I see under the hood and what they see may be more work than they suggest……
