Volvo Repair Database Need tips re-installing fuel injectors

Post by Wagonizer »

Hi List,

In solving one problem:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... hp?t=11591

I seemed to have created another. Just as I celebrated my victory now my fuel injectors are now leaking gas. They seemed fine but maybe once the engine cooled whatever precarious seals existed are now gone. I removed the injectors from the rail and installed upper gaskets- the one with the notch on the inside and outside. I stuck the top ridge of the injectors into the inner notch of the seal. Maybe this was wrong. I seated them all in the rail using peanut oil as my mechanic suggested (I couldn't get any silicon grease) and then twisted the rail back onto the fuel like. I re-used the lower seals (probably a mistake) as FCP sent me the upper ones when I wanted the lower ones. I think they have their part numbers reversed this is evident when you look at the pics.

So do the upper gaskets go around the ridge of the injectors or are they sandwiched between the top of the injector and the rail?

Is it possible that the smooth gaskets that are part of the injectors need replacing (they seemed fine) and if so where would I get them?

Can anyone recommend a commonly available lubricant that I could use to safely seat the injectors once I get new lower seals/gaskets as no one seems to have silicon grease?

Any other tips?
What am I missing...

Thanks so much in advance. I feel like an idiot.

I'm thinking peanut oil = snake oil...but I don't know. I do know that Vaseline is recommended.

You can get the seals (O-rings) for the injectors from http://www.quickbrickmotorsports.com/ $12 a set for your car.
He also has a pdf file on how to replace them: http://www.quickbrickmotorsports.com/in ... _oring.pdf

It's a good thing you couldn't find any silicone grease it would have ruined your oxygen sensors. Vaseline is the best, it's petroleum based and all the fuel seals are made of petroleum resistant materials.

I had QBM(Quickbrickmotorsports) send me the o-rings for the fuel injectors for $12 and they did not fit. The outside diameter was to small so the injector would fall right out of the rail. I sent them an email and never heard from them. Needless to say Im not to happy with them.

I then found an injector/carb shop and had them professionally cleaned and rebuilt. I watched the guy do it. New o-rings , pintle cap and he said he put a filter in the end.

Thanks. Vaseline all the way! I'm gong to order a set of o-rings.
MIJ, did you actually order them from quickbrick and have good luck? Maybe I should find a different source.

Now what about the top seals?:

Do those go around the tip or get sandwiched between it and the rail?

you guys rock

Those go in the fuel rail, its a spacer between the rail and the injector.

I would get a Haynes manual if I were you or if you have one look in it . There are pics of how this works in it.

I can tell you another thing, your car is older like mine and when I put the O-rings on from QBM it broke the pintle cap on the end of the injector because the pintle cap gets britel from age and heat. Its a known fact these pintle caps break and I think it even says this on QBMs website.

If I was going to do this from scratch like you I would not buy the O-rings from QBM, I would get the injectors cleaned and rebuilt professionally from an injector shop(new o-rings are put on). It costs about 20-25 a piece(injector) for this.

Thanks for the tips. I ended up getting it all sorted out. I went to a Volvo dealer and got a new set of seals (upper and lower) the dealer was out of stock on the o-rings which are indeed available at $18 for the kit. I found a local parts place that had an o-ring kit in stock (Standard Parts # SK-1) that comes with a neat little plastic cone tool that makes the o-rings easy to put on. If you get this kit ($6) note that it only has 8 o-rings so you'll need an extra two (he had an open box and hooked me up). Also the standard o-rings are light brown but seem exactly the same in size. I did read the Haynes manual but its not specific about those upper seals. I guess the upper seals can work in different ways but the service tech at the Volvo dealer told me that the top ridge of the injector does go inside the notch of the upper (rail) seals. The Vaseline worked great. Also BTW the upper seals from Volvo seemed to fit slightly better and be a little harder then the ones I got from FCP. I had to do couple passes at pressing things down before all the seals seemed to be fine. Hopefully it'll hold.

Cheers,

Bradford

To answer a previous question, no I have not ordered these specific parts from Slater at Quickbrick. I have however ordered some other things and never had an issue. I understand that Slater has some kind of medical problem that takes him out of commission from time to time.

The Chilton manual is slightly better than Haynes for this showing the spacer that goes up in the rail , the o-rings for the injector and the seal that goes into the manifold.

Some people have pulled injectors out of the rail and didnt even know there was a spacer in there because it fell out so fast and they didnt see it. I had a thread about this on Volvospeed and like I said some people didnt even know the spacer was there so they lost it and put the injector back in.
