1987 Volvo 240 DL wont start
OK.. this car hesnt been driven in about 4 years but a few months ago my father and myself went out and got it to start, but shortly after the battery died. Seeing as the battery was old we went to get a new one but the next day that battery was also dead. Does anybody have any ideas on what i should do?
you obviously have something that has grounded badly.
Have a look around the starter and battery leads to ensure that they are not touching the body due to excessive corrosion.
Also check the leads to the alternator as well as the voltage regulator built in the alternator.

i was just thinking about getting a brand new alternator because my parents baugth this car from a family friend about 8 years ago and i dont think they have changed it since then...

The alternator is not a 'service item' so should only need replacing if it is faulty. Even if it is faulty it would not have drained a new battery overnight unless it is the piece of kit that is grounded (earthed).i was just thinking about getting a brand new alternator
As CarVolvo has said, check very carefully all of the main leads to the battery and starter. Volvo leads have been known to lose their insulation on more than one occasion.
