Volvo Repair Database disassembling manual climate control 95 850

Post by etzal »

Here are the steps involved in taking apart the module for the AC and recirculation switches for an 95 850 GLT with manual climate control.
Step 1
Pull and remove control knobs

Step 2
Remove face plate. Secured by two screw in temp dials

Step 3
Remove wiring connector. With utility knife cut felt tape on bottom, and then remove module by pressing tabs on sides

Step 4
Press two tabs in rear, one tab on each side and gently lift top cover enough to remove rocker switches. Be very careful as the pins on the switches are fragile and it is spring loaded. Press one more tab in front and remove top cover. The AC LED was stuck to the hood and had to be separated before the top could be removed. The LED must have got really hot.

Step 5
To reassemble first position the gold colored spring and slider in the bottom cover with the pointy end of slider facing toward the front.

Step 6
Next step is to replace circuit board. Next insert one of the two metal strips upside down with the pin inserted in the hole on one of the terminals. Place a copper colored spring between the boss on the strip and one of the plastic prongs sticking through the circuit board to hold it in position. Repeat for the other metal strip.

Step 7
Replace the top cover but leave enough room in front to reinsert the rocker switches. Snap shut.

Well done!

Having done this repair myself, the only thing I can add is that - in the process of disassembly - where springs and contacts are sailing around the room - there are a couple of small, bullet shaped, hollow, brass followers that fit behind the A/C and REC buttons that have a very small diameter spring that fits behind them. Those must be in place on the back of the switch buttons before they are snapped back into the switch assembly so as to follow the detents and fix the switches in their respective on or off positions. There is also a top and a bottom on the rocker switches themselves. If you look at them, prior to snapping them back into the switch housing, it becomes fairly obvious.

If you fail in the repair process, the part number is 6802442 for the switch assembly and it cost me U.S. $95.43 at the stealership. I have not yet had to use it since the repair has thus far (2 months) worked flawlessly. I still carry the new one in the glovebox just in case. The keeping a spare is, of course, because there is a no return policy on special order electrical parts.

:o
